The Night of Broken Glass<\/span>
On
\nNovember 9, 1938, Jewish people in Germany and German-controlled
\nterritories were beaten, arrested and killed. Synagogues were burned and
\n Jewish businesses were vandalized. In most cases, the police made no
\neffort to control the mobs that carried out these crimes.

\nKristallnacht, literally, “Night of Crystal,” is often referred
\nto as the “Night of Broken Glass.”<\/b><\/i> The name refers to the wave of
\nviolent anti-Jewish pogroms<\/a>
\n which took place on November 9 and 10, 1938, throughout Germany,
\nannexed Austria, and in areas of the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia
\nrecently occupied by German troops.<\/span>
\n
<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n<\/span>
\nInstigated primarily by Nazi Party officials and members of the SA (Sturmabteilungen<\/i>: literally Assault Detachments, but commonly known as Storm Troopers) and Hitler Youth, Kristallnacht <\/i>owes
\n its name to the shards of shattered glass that lined German streets in
\nthe wake of the pogrom\u2013broken glass from the windows of synagogues,
\nhomes, and Jewish-owned businesses plundered and destroyed during the
\nviolence. <\/span>
\n
<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In its aftermath, German officials announced that Kristallnacht <\/i>had
\n erupted as a spontaneous outburst of public sentiment in response to
\nthe assassination of Ernst vom Rath, a German embassy official stationed
\n in Paris. Herschel Grynszpan, a 17-year-old Polish Jew, had shot the
\ndiplomat on November 7, 1938. A few days earlier, German authorities had
\n expelled thousands of Jews of Polish citizenship living in Germany from
\n the Reich; Grynszpan had received news that his parents, residents in
\nGermany since 1911, were among them. <\/span>
\n
<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Initially denied entry into their native Poland, Grynszpan’s parents
\nand the other expelled Polish Jews found themselves stranded in a
\nrefugee camp near the town of Zbaszyn in the border region between
\nPoland and Germany. Already living illegally in Paris himself, a
\ndesperate Grynszpan apparently sought revenge for his family’s
\nprecarious circumstances by appearing at the German embassy and shooting
\n the diplomatic official assigned to assist him. <\/span>
\n

Vom Rath died on November 9, 1938, two days after the shooting. The day happened to coincide with the anniversary of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch<\/a>,
\n an important date in the National Socialist calendar. The Nazi Party
\nleadership, assembled in Munich for the commemoration, chose to use the
\noccasion as a pretext to launch a night of antisemitic excesses. Propaganda<\/a>
\n minister Joseph Goebbels, a chief instigator of the pogrom, intimated
\nto the convened Nazi ‘Old Guard’ that ‘World Jewry’ had conspired to
\ncommit the assassination and announced that, “the F\u00c3\u00bchrer has decided
\nthat \u2026 demonstrations should not be prepared or organized by the Party,
\nbut insofar as they erupt spontaneously, they are not to be hampered.” <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nrichmond, va. |<\/b> It was Nov. 10, 1938, about 2 p.m.
\nEleven-year-old Alex Lebenstein stood frightened in the front yard of
\nhis family’s home in Haltern, Germany.<\/p>\n

“All of a sudden, these people came around the corner screaming
\nanti-Semitic slogans. A boy I had been in kindergarten with was shooting
\n at me with a slingshot. It was the first time I had seen my father
\ntotally defenseless. I put my hand in his and I felt sweat from his hand
\n on mine,” Lebenstein recalled.<\/p>\n

For survivors of Kristallnacht, the terror is as fresh in their minds
\nnow as the day Jews were attacked throughout the German Reich.
\nLebenstein still gets emotional when sharing his story.<\/p>\n

“One of the men grabbed my father by the shoulder and spit in his face.
\nThey tore his World War I medals from his shirt and stomped them into
\nthe ground. They started beating my father. Furniture started flying
\nthrough the windows. My mother was screaming: ‘Let’s get out of here.
\nThey are killing us.’ We slipped out a back street, hoping the men would
\n be finished soon and we could go back home,” he said.<\/p>\n

About 130 miles away in Mainz, Germany, Ruth Rosenberg, 13, also was
\nscared. Ten Nazis searched for guns in the apartment where her family
\nlived.<\/p>\n

“We didn’t have any. I had never seen a gun,” Rosenberg said. “They went
\n all through the apartment. They couldn’t open one cabinet, so I took a
\nscrewdriver and forced the cabinet open.”<\/p>\n

Now Richmond, Va., is home for Lebenstein, 77, and Rosenberg, 79. They
\nrecalled Kristallnacht, the government-sponsored attack on Nov. 9 and
\n10, 1938. <\/p>\n

Rosenberg tries not to dwell on her memories, but Lebenstein still
\ndreams about the events of that time. It was the worst two days of his
\nlife, he said. In an effort to make something positive out of the
\nhorrors of Kristallnacht, Lebenstein returned to his hometown in 1995. A
\n letter from two high school students in Haltern asking him to tell them
\n about Kristallnacht changed his mind. He still has the letter.<\/p>\n

Since then, he has made several trips to Haltern and has already been
\ninvited to return next year. “I feel a responsibility to teach the
\ntruth. To teach people to be tolerant. That’s my responsibility. That’s
\nwhy I go there,” he said. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nIn the days surrounding Nov. 9, 1938, the Nazis committed the worst pogrom<\/a>
\n Germany had seen since the Middle Ages. To mark the incident’s 75th
\nanniversary, an exhibition in Berlin gathers previously unknown reports
\nby foreign diplomats, revealing how the shocking events prompted little
\nmore than hollow condemnation. <\/span><\/div>\n
\n

\nConsul-General Robert Townsend Smallbones had already seen much of the
\nworld. He had been in Angola, Norway and Croatia, and he had spent eight
\n years in Germany with the British diplomatic corps. Despite the Nazi
\ndictatorship, the 54-year-old held Germans in high esteem. They were
\n“habitually kind to animals, to children, to the aged and infirm. They
\nseemed to me to have no cruelty in their makeup,” Smallbones wrote in a
\nreport to the British Foreign Office. <\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
\nGiven his impression of the Germans, the representative of the British
\nEmpire was all the more astonished by what he experienced in early
\nNovember 1938. In Paris, Herschel Gr\u00c3\u00bcnspan, a 17-year-old Jewish refugee
\n from the northern German city of Hanover, had shot the German diplomat
\nErnst vom Rath in an act of protest against Hitler’s policies regarding
\nthe Jews. At first, the Nazis only hunted down Jews in the Hesse region
\nof Germany, surrounding Frankfurt. But, after Rath’s death on Nov. 9,
\nthe pogroms spread throughout the German Reich, where synagogues were
\nburned, Jewish shop windows were smashed and thousands were taken to
\nconcentration camps and mistreated. <\/span><\/div>\n
\n

\n
\nSmallbones reported from Frankfurt that Jews had been taken to a large
\nbuilding and forced to kneel and place their heads on the ground. After
\nsome of them had vomited, Smallbones writes, the “guards removed the
\nvomit by taking the culprit by the scruff of the neck and wiping it away
\n with his face and hair.” According to Smallbones’ account, after a few
\nhours, the victims were taken to the Buchenwald concentration camp,
\nwhere many were tortured and a few beaten to death. The prisoners were
\neven forced to urinate into each other’s mouths. This was one of the
\ndetails Smallbones learned from a golfing partner, a German Jew, after
\nthe latter’s release from Buchenwald. <\/span><\/div>\n

\n“I flattered myself that I understood the German character,” the
\nconsul-general wrote, but added that he had not expected this “outbreak
\nof sadistic cruelty.” <\/span><\/div>\n
\n

\nThe pogroms in November 1938 lasted several days, although history books
\n often refer to the event merely as one “Night of the Broken Glass”
\n(Kristallnacht) because Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels announced
\non the radio on Nov. 10 that the excesses had ended. Experts estimate
\nthat up to 1,500 people died in the days surrounding Nov. 9. It was the
\nworst pogrom in Germany since the Middle Ages. <\/span><\/div>\n

\nWhat is also noteworthy about the documents is what they do not contain.
\n In this respect, they point to the failure of the international
\ncommunity and its far-reaching consequences. The diplomats almost
\nunanimously condemned the murders and acts of violence and destructions.
\n The British described the pogrom as “Medieval barbarism,” the
\nBrazilians called it a “disgusting spectacle,” and French diplomats
\nwrote that the “scope of brutality” was only “exceeded by the massacres
\nof the Armenians,” referring to the Turkish genocide of 1915-1916. <\/span><\/div>\n

\nNevertheless, no country broke off diplomatic relations with Berlin or
\nimposed sanctions, and only Washington recalled its ambassador. Most of
\nall, however, the borders of almost all countries remained largely
\nclosed for the roughly 400,000 Jewish Germans. <\/b> [Yes,emphasis mine]<\/span><\/div>\n

\nMany diplomatic missions were already in contact with victims because
\nmen from the SS and the SA, Nazi Party officials and members of the
\nHitler Youth were also harassing foreign Jews who lived in Germany. In
\nearly November, more than 1,000 Jews fleeing from the Nazis took refuge
\nat the Polish consulate in Leipzig. In an account of the fate of the
\nSperling family, the local consul wrote that they had been practically
\nbeaten to death, and that “many valuable objects” had been stolen from
\ntheir apartment, “including a radio, a check for 3,600 Reichsmarks,
\n3,400 Reichsmarks in cash and other valuable things.” The thugs had
\napparently undressed the wife and tried “to rape her.” <\/span><\/div>\n

\nGerman Jews also sought protection in foreign consulates, especially
\nthose of the Americans. “Jews from all sections of Germany thronged into
\n the office until it was overflowing with humanity, begging for an
\nimmediate visa or some kind of letter in regard to immigration, which
\nmight influence the police not to arrest or molest them,” reported
\nSamuel W. Honaker, the US consul-general in Stuttgart.

\non fire by well-disciplined and apparently well-equipped young men in
\ncivilian clothes,” reported US Consul-General Honaker, noting that the
\nprocess was “practically the same” in all cities. “The doors of the
\nsynagogues were forced open. Certain sections of the building and
\nfurnishing were drenched with petrol and set on fire. Bibles, prayer
\nbooks and other sacred things were thrown into the flames,” he wrote. A
\ntotal of 1,406 synagogues were burned down. <\/span><\/div>\n

\nThen they began smashing shop windows. The shops were easy to identify,
\nespecially in Berlin. A few months earlier, Nazis had forced Jewish shop
\n owners in the capital city to write their names in white paint and
\nlarge letters on the shop windows. <\/span><\/div>\n

\nThe second wave came during the course of the next day, as the Hungarian
\n charg\u00c3\u00a9 d’affaires reported from the German capital: “In the afternoon,
\nafter school, 14- to 18-year-old teenagers, mostly members of the Hitler
\n Youth, were unleashed on the shops. They forced their way into the
\nbusinesses, where they turned things upside down, destroyed all
\nfurniture and everything made of glass, jumbled all the merchandise and
\nthen, while cheering for Hitler, left the scene to search for other
\nplaces to ransack. In the city’s eastern districts, the local populace
\nalso looted the devastated shops.”

\nAs instructed, the perpetrators were not wearing party uniforms.
\nGoebbels wanted the public to believe that the pogrom was a reflection
\nof “the justified and understandable outrage of the German people” over
\nthe death of Rath, the diplomat — and that the police were powerless. <\/span><\/div>\n

\nBut none of the diplomats believed this version of the events,
\nespecially, as a Brazilian embassy counselor scoffed, in a country with
\nthe “most powerful, tightly organized, perfectly equipped and most
\nbrutal police force in the world, in the best possible position to
\npromptly suppress any turmoil within the population.” <\/span><\/div>\n

\nThe uniformity of the approach in hundreds of cities and villages was
\nenough to expose this lie…<\/span><\/div>\n

\nThere are many, MANY historical documents which share of the horrors of
\nKristallnacht, and many of those include eye-witness reports of those
\nwho survived.  Even so, to this day, there are deniers out there who
\ninsist that a) none of these atrocities happened, or b) this could never
\n happen in today’s society.<\/span>
\n<\/span>

\nJust as in 1938, today’s politicians choose to turn a blind eye – a deaf
\n ear –  to the murder and terrorism carried out in the name of political
\n or religious bigotry.   As always, Jews remain under constant attack,

\nrecent anti-Semitic attacks. \u201cIn the most disturbing incident, a mob of
\nsix black teenagers shouting, \u2018Dirty Jew!\u2019 and \u2018Dirty kike!\u2019 repeatedly
\nbashed Marc Heinberg, 61, as he walked home from temple in Sheepshead
\nBay (in June.) <\/span>

\nThis is one of several black mob attacks on \u2014 and robberies of \u2014
\nJewish people in Brooklyn over the last two years, leaving broken bones
\nand life-threatening injuries in their wake…<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
