{"id":55423,"date":"2013-08-03T05:24:17","date_gmt":"2013-08-03T04:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/fda-ban-on-gay-blood-donors-outdated-discriminatory-us-lawmakers\/55423\/"},"modified":"2013-08-03T05:24:17","modified_gmt":"2013-08-03T04:24:17","slug":"fda-ban-on-gay-blood-donors-outdated-discriminatory-us-lawmakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/fda-ban-on-gay-blood-donors-outdated-discriminatory-us-lawmakers\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA ban on gay blood donors outdated, discriminatory &#8211; US lawmakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ftpimagefix\" style=\"float:left\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/usa\/fda-gay-blood-donors-discriminatory-980\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/files\/news\/1f\/fa\/40\/00\/us-blood.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>US lawmakers are calling on the Department of Health and Human Services to end the ban on blood donations from homosexual men, a prohibition enacted thirty years ago during the height of the HIV\/AIDS scare in America.<\/p>\n<p>\n  Senator Elizabeth Warren (Democrat-Massachusetts) and 86 other<br \/>\n  Congressional representatives signed a letter to the Food and<br \/>\n  Drug Administration calling for an end to the policy, which<br \/>\n  forbids \u201c<i>men who have had sex with other men (MSM), at any<br \/>\n  time since 1977<\/i>.\u201d \u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The reasoning for the ban, according to the FDA\u2019s website, is<br \/>\n  based on the idea that men with a \u201c<i>history of male-to-male sex<br \/>\n  is associated with an increased risk for exposure to and<br \/>\n  transmission of certain infectious diseases, including the HIV<br \/>\n  virus, that causes AIDS<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Yet the American Medical Association, the largest group of<br \/>\n  doctors in the US, has called for a reversal of the ban,<br \/>\n  declaring the policy outdated.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201c<i>The lifetime ban on blood donation for men who have sex with<br \/>\n  men is discriminatory and not based on sound science<\/i>,\u201d AMA<br \/>\n  Board member said in June. \u201c<i>This new policy urges a federal<br \/>\n  policy change to ensure blood donation bans or deferrals are<br \/>\n  applied to donors according to their individual level of risk and<br \/>\n  are not based on sexual orientation alone<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Senator Warren\u2019s letter, signed by both Democrats and<br \/>\n  Republicans, was inspired by a constituent who contacted her to<br \/>\n  say he hoped to donate blood for the Boston Marathon bombing<br \/>\n  victims but, as a gay man, was denied.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201c<i>For me, this has been a basic issue of fairness and of<br \/>\n  science \u2014 blood donation policies should be ground in science,<br \/>\n  not ugly and inaccurate stereotypes<\/i>,\u201d Warren wrote on her<br \/>\n  website, adding that the man\u2019s letter inspired her to dig<br \/>\n  \u201c<i>deeper into this discriminatory ban and I didn\u2019t like what I<br \/>\n  found. Current policies are contrary to science<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Critics of the ban say it is one of the lingering results of the<br \/>\n  1980s-era stereotype that AIDS was primarily a \u201c<i>gay<br \/>\n  disease<\/i>,\u201d an idea medical science has rendered irrelevant.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Despite the growing animosity, the ban remains in place<br \/>\n  throughout much of the world. Spain, Australia, Italy, Russia,<br \/>\n  Uruguay, Mexico, and Poland are among the few nations without a<br \/>\n  ban. Several others mandate a time restriction for men who have<br \/>\n  had sex with men, often one year but in some cases they may not<br \/>\n  donate for five years since their last sexual encounter.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Current medical regulations in the US require a 12-month waiting<br \/>\n  period before blood donations are allowed from people who have<br \/>\n  had sex with an HIV carrier or someone with viral hepatitis.<br \/>\n  Screening tests for those diseases, though, are capable of<br \/>\n  identifying HIV within nine days and hepatitis C in approximately<br \/>\n  seven days, according to the Red Cross.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  For years the FDA has preached patience, calling for time so that<br \/>\n  tests \u201c<i>can assure that blood recipients are not placed at an<br \/>\n  increased risk of HIV or other transfusion transmitted<br \/>\n  diseases<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  That promise, for Warren, American Medical Association, and<br \/>\n  others, has taken too long to come to fruition.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201c<i>Our current policies turn away healthy, willing donors even<br \/>\n  when we face serious blood shortages<\/i>,\u201d the letter went on.<br \/>\n  \u201c<i>Further, the existing lifetime ban continues to perpetuate<br \/>\n  inaccurate stereotypes about gay and bisexual men, and fosters an<br \/>\n  atmosphere that promotes discrimination and discourages<br \/>\n  individuals from seeking HIV testing and treatment services<\/i>.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Republished from: <a href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/usa\/fda-gay-blood-donors-discriminatory-980\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"FDA ban on gay blood donors outdated, discriminatory - US lawmakers\">RT<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US lawmakers are calling on the Department of Health and Human Services to end the ban on blood donations from homosexual men, a prohibition enacted thirty years ago during the height of the HIV\/AIDS scare in America.
