They then seemingly bang his head on the ground and punch him eight times while holding him down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.mirror.co.uk\/upl\/m4\/nov2008\/5\/3\/EA690EBB-996C-DCBD-38B6674AA4F67053.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"POlice beat handcuffed war veteran Mark Aspinall\" width=\"450\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lance Corporal Mark, 24, who has served in Afghanistan and Iraq and was described as a model soldier by his commanding officer, was later charged with assaulting police and a public order offence.<\/p>\n<p>Magistrates found him guilty and ordered him to pay the officers \u00a3250 in compensation. But the charges were quashed on appeal by judge John Phipps who said: \u201cI am shocked and appalled at the level of police violence shown here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now the Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an inquiry in the wake of the publication of the shocking CCTV images by our sister paper the Sunday Mirror.<\/p>\n<p>The Greater Manchester Police\u2019s professional standards branch is also holding an internal inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>Mark, who admits being drunk, suffered 14 head injuries during the incident in Wigan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Paul Byrne\u00a0| \u00a0 Two police officers are being investigated for allegedly pinning down war hero Mark Aspinall and repeatedly punching him.
