{"id":43537,"date":"2013-06-19T19:27:23","date_gmt":"2013-06-19T18:27:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/uk-govt-can-be-sued-over-troop-deaths-2\/43537\/"},"modified":"2013-06-19T19:27:23","modified_gmt":"2013-06-19T18:27:23","slug":"uk-govt-can-be-sued-over-troop-deaths-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/uk-govt-can-be-sued-over-troop-deaths-2\/","title":{"rendered":"UK govt. can be sued over troop deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Families of killed soldiers can sue UK govt. for negligence<\/p>\n<p>Families of soldiers killed in Iraq war can sue UK government for negligence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"divDetailBody\">\n<p>The Supreme Court in Britain has ruled that families of soldiers killed in Iraq can bring damages claims against the government for negligence under the Human Rights Act.\n<\/p>\n<p>This comes as cases were brought forward by the families of three British soldiers killed in Iraq, when their poorly protected Snatch Land Rovers were wiped out by roadside bombs.\n<\/p>\n<p>The troops, Lee Ellis, Phillip Hewett, and Kirk Redpath died as a result of such attacks between 2005 and 2007.\n<\/p>\n<p>Jocelyn Cockburn, a lawyer for the families said,\u201d The court had established &#8220;that soldiers have human rights, and they do remain within the jurisdiction of the UK, and they don&#8217;t lose those because they are on the battlefield\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s highest court\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s decision will bring about many implications of the way the Ministry of Defence (MoD) should provide protection to the soldiers.\n<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s Defense Secretary Philip Hammond said he is &#8220;very concerned at the wider implications of this judgment.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>A total of 179 British servicemen died after the invasion of Iraq in 2003. A few dozen died because of friendly fire or killed inside lightly armoured vehicles.
