The group was also blamed for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/449251-northern-ireland-blast-courthouse\/\">car bomb<\/a> attack outside a Derry courthouse in January and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/432981-derry-riots-murder-police\/\">six nights<\/a> of rioting in the city last summer, the worst violence the region had seen in years.<\/p>\n<p>Many have suggested that Brexit tensions are to blame for the recent uptick in violence, but that reasoning is <em>\u201ctoo simplistic,\u201d<\/em> Irish journalist Danielle Ryan said. In that vein, when it came to the Brexit vote in 2016, nationalists mostly voted to remain in the European Union, while unionists mostly voted to leave. Overall, a majority in NI voted to remain, and that added<strong><em> \u201cone more layer of division into an already deeply divided society,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>But what is potentially having a greater impact than Brexit is the collapse, two years ago, of the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont \u2014 the powersharing institution created by the Good Friday Agreement (GFA), which was signed in 1998 and brought a relative peace and end to 30 years of conflict known as the Troubles.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Ireland currently has<strong><em> \u201cno functioning political system,\u201d<\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>\u201cif there is a vacuum, something will fill it,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> journalist and political activist Eamon McCann told RT. The collapse of the political institutions has <strong><em>\u201ccreated an anger\u201d<\/em><\/strong> among people \u2014 and rioting tends to happen in working class, Catholic\/nationalist areas, where many young people are facing a tough economic situation and feel their future prospects are dismal, McCann explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThey believe they are being treated badly by society, by the police, by officialdom, by bureaucracy, so they are alienated from society, so to speak,\u201d<\/em><\/strong>he said.<\/p>\n<p>It is in that context that a group like the New IRA can recruit.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, McCann is careful to add that support for the New IRA among the nationalist\/Catholic community is extremely low and there was widespread revulsion at McKee\u2019s death. The New IRA is also <strong><em>\u201c<\/em><\/strong><em>much, much smaller<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/em>in comparison to the Provisional IRA that was active during the period of the Troubles.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"read-more-big\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/456968-woman-killed-northern-ireland-riot\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n    <span class=\"read-more-big__container\"><br \/>\n        <span class=\"read-more-big__content\"><br \/>\n            <span class=\"read-more-big__subtitle\">Also on rt.com<\/span><br \/>\n            <span class=\"read-more-big__title\">\u2018Terrorist incident\u2019: Journalist gunned down during riot in Derry, Northern Ireland (VIDEOS)<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n            <span class=\"read-more-big__cover lazyload\" data-bgset=\"&#10;                            https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2019.04\/xxs\/5cb9a9b4dda4c834328b4577.jpg 280w,&#10;                            https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2019.04\/xs\/5cb9a9b4dda4c834328b4577.jpg 320w,&#10;                            https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2019.04\/thumbnail\/5cb9a9b4dda4c834328b4577.jpg 460w,&#10;                            https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2019.04\/m\/5cb9a9b4dda4c834328b4577.jpg 540w,&#10;                            https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2019.04\/l\/5cb9a9b4dda4c834328b4577.jpg 768w,&#10;                            https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2019.04\/article\/5cb9a9b4dda4c834328b4577.jpg 980w,&#10;                            https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2019.04\/xxl\/5cb9a9b4dda4c834328b4577.jpg 1240w&#10;                        \" data-sizes=\"auto\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to remember, however, political analyst and journalist John Wight told RT, that the six counties in Northern Ireland were <strong><em>\u201ccolonized by Britain\u201d<\/em><\/strong> and that the Provisional IRA emerged because Northern Ireland in the 1960s and 70s was a<strong><em> \u201csectarian, apartheid, mini-state\u201d<\/em><\/strong> where the Catholic community was denied basic rights.<strong><em\/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThe Provisional IRA was a child of British colonial and sectarian oppression,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> he said.<\/p>\n<p>Another more recent factor adding to tensions in the last couple of years is British Prime Minister Theresa May\u2019s <em>\u201coutrageous and despicable\u201d<\/em> decision to <em>\u201cwade into Northern Irish politics by violating the neutrality that is enshrined in the GFA,\u201d<\/em> Wight said.<\/p>\n<p>May has\u00a0used the right-wing Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/394086-dup-tory-deal-signed\/\">prop up<\/a> her government in the House of Commons, since unexpectedly losing her majority in the 2017 general election. Under the terms of the GFA, both north and south must vote in favor of unification.<\/p>\n<p>Recent polls have suggested support for a united Ireland in the Republic is over 60 percent \u2014 and over 70 percent in border regions and among young people. In the north itself, the polls are more divided, but a YouGov <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/brexit-united-ireland-referendum-northern-border-uk-yougov-poll-a8389086.html\">survey<\/a> commissioned by the BBC last year found 45 percent in favor of maintaining the status quo, 42 percent in favor of a united Ireland \u2014 and 13 percent undecided.<\/p>\n<p>Whether there will be more violence in the coming months depends in part on how Brexit plays out going forward, security analyst and former UK counter-terrorism intelligence officer Charles Shoebridge said. A Brexit without a customs agreement<strong><em> \u201ccould increase levels of violence\u201d<\/em><\/strong> if that meant the presence of customs officers and security personnel at the border, a possibility which border communities are deeply worried by.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"read-more-big\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-ed\/435838-ireland-united-brexit-northern\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n    <span class=\"read-more-big__container\"><br \/>\n        <span class=\"read-more-big__content\"><br \/>\n            <span class=\"read-more-big__subtitle\">Also on rt.com<\/span><br \/>\n            <span class=\"read-more-big__title\">United Ireland? It may not be as far off as you think<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n            <span class=\"read-more-big__cover lazyload\" data-bgset=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2018.08\/thumbnail\/5b718276dda4c8e71c8b4575.jpg\" data-sizes=\"auto\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But McCann insisted that Northern Ireland was <strong><em>\u201cnot going to go back to the days when there were mass riots and shootings day after day.<\/em><\/strong><em> That\u2019s not going to happen anymore, at least that\u2019s my judgement, for the simple reason that there\u2019s no support for it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>McCann suggested that the revulsion at McKee\u2019s death might even lead to a <strong><em>\u201clessening of violence\u201d<\/em><\/strong>in the long term, since it showed up how little support there is among the nationalist communities for a return to darker days.<\/p>\n<p>While there may not be support for a return to violence, Ryan said that the possibility is always hanging over the region; <em>\u201cwhether that is violence by dissident republican and loyalist paramilitaries, or extremist actions by police which spark more anger in disaffected communities, the threat is unfortunately still there,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Like this story?
