A group of veteran intelligence professionals have warned that the Mueller report contains no proof to back up claims of \u2018Russian hacking\u2019 and said WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange might shed some light on it.<\/p>\n
Special counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s report, made public on Thursday by the US Department of Justice, says no Americans \u2013 including Trump and his campaign staff \u2013 actually \u201ccolluded\u201d<\/em> or coordinated with Russia, but does claim that Moscow \u201cinterfered\u201d<\/em> in the 2016 US presidential election. This was done, the report asserts, through a social media influence campaign and hacking into Democrats\u2019 computers to obtain documents later published by WikiLeaks and others.<\/p>\n Even before the report\u2019s publication, in an open letter<\/a> to President Donald Trump on Tuesday, Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) called it out for this \u201ccentral-but-unproven allegation,\u201d<\/em> lambasting the special counsel for not doing any forensic work and accepting the word<\/a> of \u201ca discredited, DNC-hired firm named CrowdStrike, whose credibility is on a par with \u2018pee-tape dossier\u2019 compiler Christopher Steele.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The group said that they brought up this lack of independent forensic research in a memo<\/a> sent to Attorney General William Barr on March 13, but \u201creceived no reply or acknowledgment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n VIPS has long been vocal about the CrowdStrike-shaped hole in Russiagate\u2019s central premise; back in July 2017<\/a>, they published their own research that indicated the DNC files must have been copied locally. Several months later, VIPS member William Binney \u2013 a renowned NSA whistleblower \u2013 even met with Mike Pompeo<\/a>, then director of the CIA, and presented the group\u2019s case to him.<\/p>\n Pompeo told Binney he would follow up on his revelations with the CIA, FBI and NSA, but \u201cWe have no sign, though, that he followed through,\u201d<\/em> VIPS said in Tuesday\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n One person who could offer clarity on the issue is WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who, VIPS says, was \u201creportedly very close\u201d<\/em> to an agreement with the US government in March 2017 to discuss \u201ctechnical evidence ruling out certain parties\u201d<\/em> in the DNC case. However, then-FBI Director James Comey reportedly ordered the FBI to scrap the deal, after being informed of it by Senator Mark Warner (D-Virginia), ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.<\/p>\n Like this story?
