Many have warned that if he is extradited to the U.S. for trial on conspiracy charges \u2013 and possibly much more if federal prosecutors have their way \u2013 it will lead to the criminalization of many standard journalistic practices. These scenes were only possible thanks to the transformation of Ecuador\u2019s government under the watch of President Lenin Moreno.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Since at least December 2018, Moreno has been working towards expelling the <em>Wikileaks\u00a0<\/em>publisher from the embassy. The Ecuadorian president\u2019s behavior represents a stunning reversal of the policies of his predecessor, Rafael Correa, the defiantly progressive leader who authorized Assange\u2019s asylum back in 2012, and who now lives in exile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">While Ecuador\u2019s Foreign Minister Jose Valencia\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2019\/apr\/11\/julian-assange-ecuador-president-lenin-moreno-evict-from-embassy\">blamed<\/a><\/span>\u00a0his government\u2019s expulsion of Assange on the Australian journalist\u2019s \u201crudeness,\u201d the sellout is clearly a byproduct of Moreno\u2019s right-leaning agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Political instability has swept across Ecuador since revelations of widespread corruption in Moreno\u2019s inner circle emerged. The scandal coincided with Moreno\u2019s turn towards neoliberal economic reforms, from implementing a massive IMF loan package to the gradual and total embrace and support for U.S. foreign policy in the region.
