A group of SEP members travelled 400 kilometres from war-ravaged northern Jaffna to participate and several estate workers came from the central hills plantation district.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageFull\" style=\"width:480px; oveflow:hidden;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/asset\/1210994c-5d17-49f0-a8e0-90b4c91d05aP\/image.jpg?rendition=image480\" srcset=\"\/asset\/1210994c-5d17-49f0-a8e0-90b4c91d05aP\/image.jpg?rendition=image960 2x\" width=\"480\" style=\"width:480px;\" \/><span>Part of the demonstration<\/span><\/div>\n<p>It was one of several demonstrations called by Socialist Equality Parties around the world and the <em>World Socialist Web Site<\/em> (WSWS) following Assange\u2019s arrest by British police last Thursday. The WikiLeaks publisher faces extradition to the US on bogus charges.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators enthusiastically chanted slogans in Sinhala and Tamil, including \u201cFree Julian Assange, Free Chelsea Manning,\u201d \u201cDefend the right for free speech, Defend democratic rights,\u201d and \u201cStop internet censorship, No to world war, fight for international socialism.\u201d Hundreds of copies of the WSWS April 12 Perspective, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2019\/04\/12\/pers-a12.html\">Free Julian Assange<\/a>\u201d were distributed to those watching the event or passing through the station.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lankan media outlets, including <em>Veerakesari<\/em>, Sri Lanka\u2019s main Tamil-language daily newspaper, IBC radio, Dan tv, Capital fm and madhyavadiya.lk, covered the event.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageLeft\" style=\"width:200px; oveflow:hidden;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/asset\/7ef2c436-bed2-4ba7-8689-c8490d0ff27G\/image.jpg?rendition=image480\" srcset=\"\/asset\/7ef2c436-bed2-4ba7-8689-c8490d0ff27G\/image.jpg?rendition=image960 2x\" width=\"200\" style=\"width:200px;\" \/><span>K.
