US President Donald Trump once again called on Democrats to support tighter immigration laws, threatening to dump \u201can unlimited supply\u201d of illegal immigrants in so-called sanctuary cities to force a change.<\/p>\n

Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 12, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n Answering reporters at an unrelated press event an hour later, Trump elaborated on his plan.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re apprehending thousands and thousands of people a day,\u201d<\/em> he said, adding that current laws only allow those caught to be held in custody for 20 days. \u201cWe can fix that so fast, if the Democrats would agree,\u201d<\/em> otherwise \u201cwe bring them to sanctuary city areas and let that particular area take care of it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Trump\u2019s announcement wasn\u2019t a total surprise, as two Department of Homeland Security officials told the Washington Post on Thursday night that his administration has proposed similar plans before, as a political move to pressure Democrats into supporting immigration reform. However, CNN and the Post both reported that the DHS and White House denied the proposal was still under consideration \u2013 before Trump revived it on Friday.<\/p>\n With only small sections of Trump\u2019s long-promised border wall under construction, more than 92,000 people were apprehended<\/a> at the border in March, the highest level since 2008.<\/p>\n \u201cWe’re seeing record numbers of apprehension, large groups and numbers in custody and we’ve arrived at the breaking point,”<\/em> Border Patrol official Brian Hastings said in a statement.<\/p>\n Against this backdrop, a number of mostly Democrat-run cities have enacted laws preventing their police forces from cooperating with federal immigration authorities and agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Under Governor Jerry Brown, California has gone as far as declaring itself a \u2018Sanctuary State,\u2019 and refused<\/a> to honor thousands of ICE requests to turn over illegal aliens in 2016-2017, including 3,400 charged with murder, sexual assault, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and other serious offenses.<\/p>\n For some reason, however, the Democrats in charge of these sanctuary jurisdictions expressed outrage at Trump\u2019s proposal. San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon argued that illegal immigrants are \u201cless likely\u201d <\/em>to commit crime than the US-born population, before calling the proposal \u201can all-time low for American discourse.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cI am proud to be the mayor of a sanctuary city,\u201d<\/em> Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf said, also invoking the talking point about immigrant crime rates being supposedly lower than those of native-born Americans. She opposed Trump\u2019s idea all the same.<\/p>\n House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) also slammed the proposal, calling it \u201cunworthy\u201d<\/em> of the presidency and \u201cdisrespectful of the challenges that we face as a nation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Pelosi\u2019s district lies entirely within San Francisco, a sanctuary city. Pelosi said on Thursday that \u201cthere\u2019s room and there\u2019s a need\u201d<\/em> for more immigrants \u2013 but apparently not on her doorstep.<\/p>\n Actress-turned-activist Alyssa Milano \u2013 who once described herself<\/a> as \u201can immigrant\u201d<\/em> in solidarity \u2013 also weighed in, calling Trump\u2019s plan \u201csick and twisted.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n This is so sick and twisted. <\/p>\n White House proposed releasing immigrant detainees in sanctuary cities, targeting political foes. https:\/\/t.co\/UGg0b7630v<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano) April 12, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n Democrats were soundly mocked by Trump supporters for following up their declarations of love for migrants with outrage at the idea of actually having them nearby. They were, after all, the ones calling for open borders, more immigrants and sanctuary cities \u2013 supposedly the places where the illegals are the most welcome.<\/p>\n Pelosi complaining that White House wanted to send any illegals crossing the border to her district in California. Wait…doesn\u2019t she WANT them? Isn\u2019t she ALL FOR sanctuary cities? <\/p>\n You can\u2019t have it both ways, Nancy.
