The release of the Mueller report and its conclusion that President Donald J. Trump and his top aides did not collude with Russia has prompted some important critical reflection on the American media and its penchant for sensationalism.<\/p>\n

Sean Davis, a cofounder of The Federalist<\/em>, published an article in the Wall Street Journal on<\/em>\u00a0March 26th<\/sup>titled \u201cA Catastrophic Media Failure\u201d which concluded that \u201cAmerica\u2019s blue chipped journalists botched the entire [Russia Gate] story from its birth during the presidential campaign to its final breath Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis cites as an example a 2017 Time Magazine\u00a0<\/em>cover depicting the White House getting a \u201cmakeover to transform it into the Kremlin\u201d and a December 2016.\u00a0Washington Post\u00a0<\/em>story which erroneously reported that Russian hackers had \u201cpenetrated the U.S. electric grid.\u201d In 2017, CNN reported the false claim that Donald Trump Jr. received special email access to stolen documents before their public release by Wikileaks \u2013 which if true, could have proven the president\u2019s inner circle was colluding with Russian hackers intent on taking down Mrs. Clinton.<\/p>\n

Davis further mentions an article by Jonathan Chait of New York Magazine\u00a0<\/em>before the Trump-Putin summit in July 2018 which speculated that \u201cTrump had been a Russian asset since 1987\u201d \u2013 a claim he says that was \u201cworthy of conspiracy theorists like the late Lyndon Larouche.\u201d<\/p>\n
