Of course, it\u2019s not Trump\u2019s aim to protect free expression on college campuses, but to further empower far-right organizations on college campuses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Trump\u2019s executive order, cheered by anti-choice groups, will have far-reaching consequences at public colleges, including for reproductive rights advocacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With his latest executive order, the president is handing a victory to reactionary groups that operate on college campuses, groups that have spent the last several years framing protest against them as infringements on their right to free speech. There have long been culture wars waged on U.S. campuses, and the latest wave has brought fascist speakers and organizations\u2014chiefly Milo Yiannopoulos and Richard Spencer.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"truth-post-content-high  inline-callout-container\" id=\"255792\">\n<div class=\"truth-post-content-high\" id=\"truth-1208903865\">\n<aside class=\" inline-callout inline-callout--subscribe inline-callout--dark\" id=\"255396\">\n<div class=\"inner-wrapper\">\n<h2>Don\u2019t miss a beat<\/h2>\n<p>Get the latest news and thought-provoking analysis from Truthout.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The executive order, which was<span> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=120&amp;v=KJExbV5WtjU\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\">signed at a White House ceremony<\/a><span> <\/span>on March 21, states that \u201c[the Trump] Administration seeks to promote free and open debate on college and university campuses.\u201d The order states that \u201cthe heads of covered agencies shall \u2026 ensure institutions that receive Federal research or education grants promote free inquiry, including through compliance with all applicable Federal laws, regulations, and policies.\u201d In essence, the order will allow the president to withhold federal funding from public higher education institutions that do not meet the administration\u2019s criteria for \u201cpromoting free inquiry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the order is light on details, it would be naive to assume this means there won\u2019t be negative consequences for marginalized members of university communities.<\/p>\n<p>The concern over visiting fascist speakers remains, even though Spencer\u2019s campus tour has long since ended.
