Protesters rejected Salah\u2019s sudden intervention to remove Bouteflika, who has been incapacitated since suffering a stroke in 2013. Instead, they demanded the bringing down of both the FLN and the army.<\/p>\n<p>Banners carried at the protests read \u201cRest in Peace Ga\u00efd Salah, leave power for the love of God,\u201d \u201cGa\u00efd Salah the people want democracy not a military regime,\u201d and \u201cShame on you Ga\u00efd Salah.\u201d Another popular slogan was to demand the application of Article 7 of the constitution, which stipulates that power should come from the people.<\/p>\n<p>Over a million people marched in Algiers, according to police reports, and thousands or tens of thousands marched in other major Algerian cities including Oran, Constantine, Annaba, B\u00e9ja\u00efa, Tizi Ouzou, S\u00e9tif, Tlemcen and Sidi Bel Abb\u00e8s. In Oran, protesters chanted \u201cThe transition must be led by the sovereign people and not the regime.\u201d In Tlemcen, protesters chanted \u201cOut, Out Sa\u00efd,\u201d referring to Abdelmajid Sidi Sa\u00efd, the leader of the corrupt, FLN-linked General Union of Algerian Labor (UGTA) union.<\/p>\n<p>In Algiers, huge throngs of people marched through the city\u2019s major centers including Maurice Audin Square and outside the Main Post Office.
