{"id":401648,"date":"2019-03-28T10:45:52","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T09:45:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/no-2-the-lost-journalistic-standards-of-russia-gate-consortiumnews-2\/"},"modified":"2019-03-28T10:45:52","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T09:45:52","slug":"no-2-the-lost-journalistic-standards-of-russia-gate-consortiumnews-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/no-2-the-lost-journalistic-standards-of-russia-gate-consortiumnews-2\/","title":{"rendered":"No. 2\u2014\u2018The Lost Journalistic Standards of Russia-gate\u2019 \u2013 Consortiumnews"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The Russia-gate hysteria has witnessed a widespread collapse of journalistic standards as major U.S. news outlets ignore rules about how to treat evidence in dispute, wrote Robert Parry on Nov. 20, 2017.<span id=\"more-34503\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>By Robert Parry<br \/><\/strong><em>Special to Consortium News<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>A<\/strong> <\/span>danger in both journalism and intelligence is to allow an unproven or seriously disputed fact to become part of the accepted narrative where it gets widely repeated and thus misleads policymakers and citizens alike, such as happened during the run-up to war with Iraq and is now recurring amid the frenzy over Russia-gate.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24546\" style=\"width: 544px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1605.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/lazy-load\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_1605-1028x771.jpg\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24546\" class=\"wp-image-24546 \" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"400\"  \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24546\" class=\"wp-image-24546 \" src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_1605-1028x771.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"400\"  \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-24546\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>The New York Times<\/em> building in Manhattan.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(Robert Parry)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">For instance, in a Russia-gate<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> <a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/17\/us\/politics\/trump-russia-kushner.html?_r=0\">story<\/a><\/span> on Saturday, <em>The New York Times<\/em> reported as flat fact that a Kremlin intermediary \u201ctold a Trump campaign aide, George Papadopoulos, that the Russians had \u2018dirt\u2019 on Mr. Trump\u2019s rival, Hillary Clinton, in the form of \u2018thousands of emails.\u2019\u201d The <em>Times<\/em> apparently feels that this claim no longer needs attribution even though it apparently comes solely from the 32-year-old Papadopoulos as part of his <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/file\/1007346\/download\">plea bargain<\/a><\/span> over lying to the FBI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Beyond the question of trusting an admitted liar like Papadopoulos, his supposed Kremlin contact, professor Joseph Mifsud, a little-known academic associated with the University of Stirling in Scotland, denied knowing anything about Democratic emails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/10\/30\/revealed-london-professor-centre-trumprussia-inquiry-says-have\/\">interview<\/a><\/span> with the U.K. <em>Daily Telegraph<\/em>, Mifsud acknowledged meeting with Papadopoulos but disputed having close ties to the Kremlin and rejected how Papadopoulos recounted their conversations. Specifically, he denied the claim that he mentioned emails containing \u201cdirt\u201d on Clinton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Even <em>New York Times<\/em> correspondent Scott Shane <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/30\/us\/politics\/trump-russia-mueller-indictment.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;clickSource=story-heading&amp;module=b-lede-package-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news&amp;_r=0\">noted<\/a><\/span> late last month \u2013 after the criminal complaint against Papadopoulos was unsealed \u2013 that \u201cA crucial detail is still missing: Whether and when Mr. Papadopoulos told senior Trump campaign officials about Russia\u2019s possession of hacked emails.
