{"id":401558,"date":"2019-03-27T22:50:01","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T21:50:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/corbyn-assailant-jailed-but-significance-of-his-attack-still-minimised\/"},"modified":"2019-03-27T22:50:01","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T21:50:01","slug":"corbyn-assailant-jailed-but-significance-of-his-attack-still-minimised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/corbyn-assailant-jailed-but-significance-of-his-attack-still-minimised\/","title":{"rendered":"Corbyn assailant jailed, but significance of his attack still minimised"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"nomargin\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>Corbyn assailant jailed, but significance of his attack still minimised<\/h2>\n<h5>\n<p>    By<br \/>\n    Chris Marsden<br \/>\n    <br \/>27 March 2019<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<p>The jailing of John Murphy for \u201ccommon assault by beating\u201d confirms the warning made by the Socialist Equality Party of the serious implications for the working class of the March 3 assault on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.<\/p>\n<p>The SEP warned that the attack on the 69-year-old politician by the burly 31-year-old must be taken as \u201ca serious warning of the dangerous right-wing political climate being whipped up by Britain\u2019s ruling elite and its media outlets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corbyn was in the Finsbury Park Mosque\u2019s Muslim Welfare House, when Murphy smashed an egg in his clenched fist into the side of the Labour leader\u2019s head while he was sitting down eating with his wife, Laura.<\/p>\n<p>The media responded universally by downplaying the incident, referring constantly to an \u201cegging,\u201d or someone throwing an egg, even though Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott explained that Murphy had effectively punched Corbyn leaving a livid red mark.<\/p>\n<p> Video footage, which can be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-47691606\">here<\/a>, confirms Abbott\u2019s account of a violent and serious assault. Yet the media has not changed its tune. The main news channels, the BBC and ITN, both refer to an \u201cegging\u201d when reporting Murphy\u2019s 28-day sentence. This is despite Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot, at Westminster Magistrates\u2019 Court, calling Murphy\u2019s actions \u201can attack on the democratic process,\u201d as she sentenced him to 14 days behind bars, to be on licence for the next year and to pay a \u00a3115 victim surcharge.<\/p>\n<p>Arbuthnot continued, \u201cThe impact on Jeremy Corbyn has been considerable, he says he was very shocked and surprised and he had always previously felt safe.
