But, Ottawa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/yvesengler.com\/2019\/02\/05\/canadian-interference-in-venezuela-domestic-affairs-decades-old\/\">hostility<\/a>\u00a0to Caracas is also motivated by important segments of corporate Canada, which have long been at odds with its Bolivarian government<\/p>\n<p>In a bid for a greater share of oil revenue, Venezuela forced private oil companies to become minority partners with the state oil company in 2007. This prompted Calgary-based PetroCanada to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/19468283\">sell<\/a>\u00a0its portion of an oil project and for Canadian officials to privately complain about feeling \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=eOCTVtKfYGoC&amp;pg=PT29&amp;lpg=PT29&amp;dq=Venezuela+PetroCanada&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=1jUUa6f40t&amp;sig=ACfU3U3h8lFRruyyaye1FRNT5my-yYz6iQ&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjg7enG3aPgAhXStlkKHZ12AE44ChDoATABegQIABAB#v=onepage&amp;q=Venezuela%20PetroCanada&amp;f=false\">burned<\/a>\u201d by the Venezuelan government.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela has the largest recognized oil reserves in the world. The country also has enormous gold deposits.<\/p>\n<p>A number of Canadian companies clashed with Hugo Chavez\u2019 government over its bid to gain greater control over gold extraction. Crystallex, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italaw.com\/cases\/1146\">Vanessa Ventures<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/investmentpolicyhub.unctad.org\/ISDS\/Details\/333\">Gold Reserve Inc<\/a>. and Rusoro Mining all had prolonged legal battles with the Venezuelan government. In 2016 Rusoro Mining won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2016\/12\/12\/venezuela-to-pay-us1-billion-for-expropriating-canadian-mining-companys-investment\/\">$1 billion<\/a>\u00a0claim under the Canada-Venezuela investment treaty. That same year Crystallex was awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2016\/08\/10\/crystallex-international-corporation-v-bolivarian-republic-of-venezuela-icsid-case-no-arb-af-11-2\/\">$1.2 billion<\/a>\u00a0under the Canada-Venezuela investment treaty.
