After <\/span>The Hill <\/span>reported that some of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s (D-N.Y.) fellow House Democrats were already working to recruit a primary challenger<\/a> to her 2020 campaign\u2014just four weeks into her first term\u2014the congresswoman sought to find out whether her supporters planned to back her in the next election. They responded with a clear \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just four days after the plan was reported, Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s re-election campaign had raised <\/span>more than $105,000<\/a> <\/span>after a brief fundraising effort, to be added to the $400,000 she had on hand after the 2018 election.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a good opportunity for us to see what the base was willing to do and if they were going to stand by her in the event of a primary challenge,\u201d Corbin Trent, Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s communications director, <\/span>told<\/a> <\/span>the Huffington Post.<\/em> <\/span>\u201cIt was a resounding: \u2018Yes, they will.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The congresswoman, who does not accept corporate donations and raised <\/span>$1.2 million <\/a>in small individual contributions in 2018, posted ads on Instagram and Facebook this week telling her supporters that some Democrats \u201cdon\u2019t like that we\u2019re shaking things up in D.C.\u201d<\/p>\n

The anonymous Democrat who spoke to <\/span>The Hill suggested that Ocasio-Cortez should step aside and allow \u201cnumerous council people and state legislators who\u2019ve been waiting 20 years\u201d to serve in Congress to take her seat, which she won after her surprise primary victory against 10-term Congressman Joe Crowley.<\/p>\n

As <\/span>Common Dreams <\/span>reported<\/a>, Ocasio-Cortez blamed a \u201cbroken mentality, that public office is something you wait in line for\u201d for the comments, but said she would welcome a challenge in November 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the meantime, we\u2019re going to be doing our dead-level best to make sure we are representing the needs and the will of our constituents,\u201d Trent told The Hill.<\/em><\/p>\n
