{"id":394534,"date":"2019-01-29T16:38:02","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T15:38:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/afghanistan-peace-talks-and-the-debacle-of-the-war-on-terror\/"},"modified":"2019-01-29T16:38:02","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T15:38:02","slug":"afghanistan-peace-talks-and-the-debacle-of-the-war-on-terror","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/afghanistan-peace-talks-and-the-debacle-of-the-war-on-terror\/","title":{"rendered":"Afghanistan peace talks and the debacle of the war on terror"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"nomargin\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>Afghanistan peace talks and the debacle of the war on terror<\/h2>\n<h5>\n<p>    29 January 2019<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<p>The Trump administration\u2019s special envoy for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, on Monday announced the drafting of a \u201cframework\u201d for a peace agreement with the Taliban, against which US troops have been fighting for over 17 years.<\/p>\n<p>Khalilzad has a long record in the elaboration and implementation of the criminal US policies that have led to the deaths of millions of Afghans over the past four decades, while turning millions more into refugees.<\/p>\n<p>In 1979, he served as a close aide to Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security adviser in the Carter administration, in the organization of \u201cOperation Cyclone.\u201d This was the code name for a covert CIA-orchestrated war, which provided billions of dollars\u2019 worth of arms and funding to support the mujahideen, a collection of Islamist militias that would ultimately give rise to both the Taliban and Al Qaeda, in an attempt to topple the Soviet-backed government in Kabul and to draw the USSR into what Brzezinski described as \u201cits own Vietnam.\u201d He continued to work under the Reagan administration to coordinate policy for sustaining this bloody operation.<\/p>\n<p>After a brutal civil war in which the Taliban ultimately established its control over most of the country, Khalilzad signed on as a \u201cconsultant\u201d for the energy conglomerate Unocal\u2014now part of Chevron\u2014in negotiating with the Taliban on a deal for a trans-Afghanistan gas pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>In 1996, he wrote a memo insisting that \u201cThe Taliban does not practice the anti-US style of fundamentalism practiced by Iran.
