On Tuesday around 700 strikers demonstrated outside state government offices in the Ezhilagam building. Almost 3,000 protested near the District Collector Office on Thursday, the third day of the strike.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageRight\" style=\"width:200px; oveflow:hidden;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/asset\/79b27267-a73f-4f13-bfac-5c7ed7ea8aeI\/image.png?rendition=image480\" srcset=\"\/asset\/79b27267-a73f-4f13-bfac-5c7ed7ea8aeI\/image.png?rendition=image960 2x\" width=\"200\" style=\"width:200px;\" \/><span>Nelson<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Nelson, 55, rejected claims by the state education minister that the government could not pay teachers\u2019 salary arrears because of the so-called fiscal deficit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut judges, IAS and IPS [Indian public service and police] officers were paid 21-month arrears by the pay commission,\u201d he said. Nelson denounced India\u2019s major political parties. \u201cBoth the Congress and the BJP pursue the same economic policies,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Modi-led BJP government is pushing harder to implement anti-labour policies\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CPM-led state governments also pursued the same economic reforms in favour of the rich. The \u2018Left\u2019 government in West Bengal even went to the extent of killing the farmers in Nandigram for refusing to give up their land to the investors. That government lost power in West Bengal because of its anti-labour stand.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageLeft\" style=\"width:200px; oveflow:hidden;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/asset\/85ebb1c2-97ae-47e6-afdb-53f894bb16fE\/image.png?rendition=image480\" srcset=\"\/asset\/85ebb1c2-97ae-47e6-afdb-53f894bb16fE\/image.png?rendition=image960 2x\" width=\"200\" style=\"width:200px;\" \/><span>Thamil<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Thamil <strong>[photo]<\/strong>, 53, another teacher, said teachers\u2019 living conditions were deteriorating every day. \u201cMy family\u2019s economic situation is very bad,\u201d she said. \u201cI can\u2019t afford to send my children to better quality private schools and so they go to the public schools.
