JUAN<\/span> <\/span>GONZ\u00c1LEZ:<\/strong> <\/span>\u201cPrisoners of Donald Trump.\u201d That\u2019s how longtime <\/span>NBC<\/span> <\/span>reporter and analyst William Arkin described the mainstream media in a scathing <\/span>letter<\/a> <\/span>last week announcing he would be leaving the network, accusing the media of warmongering while ignoring the, quote, \u201ccreeping fascism of homeland security.\u201d Arkin issued the blistering critique after a 30-year relationship with <\/span>NBC<\/span>, calling for Trump-free media days and a reckoning about how the network encourages a state of perpetual warfare.<\/p>\n

In the memo, he writes, quote, \u201cI find it disheartening that we do not report the failures of the generals and national security leaders. I find it shocking that we essentially condone continued American bumbling in the Middle East and now Africa through our ho-hum reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continues, quote, \u201cOf course [Trump] is an ignorant and incompetent impostor. And yet I\u2019m alarmed at how quick <\/span>NBC<\/span> <\/span>is to mechanically argue the contrary, to be in favor of policies that just spell more conflict and more war.\u201d<\/p>\n

AMY<\/span> <\/span>GOODMAN<\/span>:<\/strong> <\/span>So, you left <\/span>NBC<\/span> <\/span>with this explosive memo, that not only indicts <\/span>NBC<\/span>, your network, says basically <\/span>NBC<\/span>, they might not like this, but doesn\u2019t stand out among the crowd of corporate networks in dealing with this issue of perpetual war.<\/p>\n

WILLIAM<\/span> <\/span>ARKIN<\/span>:<\/strong> <\/span>Everything I said in this letter, which was a goodbye letter to my colleagues at <\/span>NBC<\/span>, applies to all of the mainstream networks, applies to <\/span>CNN<\/span> <\/span>and Fox, as well. So, I\u2019m not really singling out <\/span>NBC<\/span>. I was just most familiar with it.<\/p>\n
