{"id":389503,"date":"2018-12-17T20:57:12","date_gmt":"2018-12-17T19:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/national-interest-or-personal-interest-theresa-mays-spat-with-tony-blair\/"},"modified":"2018-12-17T20:57:12","modified_gmt":"2018-12-17T19:57:12","slug":"national-interest-or-personal-interest-theresa-mays-spat-with-tony-blair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/national-interest-or-personal-interest-theresa-mays-spat-with-tony-blair\/","title":{"rendered":"National Interest or Personal Interest: Theresa May\u2019s Spat with Tony Blair"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The war of words between Tony Blair and Theresa May over the last few days is quite revealing \u2013 not of Blair\u2019s known position regarding the Brexit mess, but because the Prime Minister\u2019s rant showed her weakness.\u00a0 Her position is unsustainable and the last thing she wanted was unwelcome comments from an ex-Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>She had, after all, just come back from Brussels yet again, carrying no hope from the EU negotiators, but then she had offered no new ideas to put on the table.\u00a0 The agreed withdrawal text was \u2018the best deal\u2019 she could get, and Parliament had been refused the chance to vote against it \u2013 a vote she had promised then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/dec\/10\/theresa-may-postpones-brexit-deal-meaningful-vote-eu\">taken away<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The spat started with Tony Blair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/dec\/16\/tony-blair-claims-theresa-may-brexit-deal-not-in-national-interest-amid-public-spat\">speaking<\/a> on BBC\u2019s Today programme* prior to a speech he was due to make later that day.\u00a0 His predecessor John Major, had already publicly given his support for 2 options: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/cf49c956-c35f-11e8-8d55-54197280d3f7\">another referendum<\/a> (the Peoples Vote) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/politics\/stop-the-clock-on-brexit-pleads-former-pm-sir-john-major-a4014391.html\">revoking<\/a> the Article 50 withdrawal.\u00a0 Blair had also <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/tony-blair-makes-fresh-pitch-for-peoples-vote-on-brexit-11580388\">backed<\/a> the People\u2019s Vote.<\/p>\n<p>There is currently no majority in Parliament for May\u2019s deal or any other, including crashing out of the EU with no deal at all.
