Respecting the internationally-recognized status of Jerusalem is a legally-binding commitment to international law. The fact that the US chose to violate the law, hardly makes the opposite act heroic in itself.<\/p>\n<p>Only five days earlier, on November 30, Canada joined a tiny minority of states, including Israel, the US, Australia and the Marshall Islands to vote \u2018no\u2019 against a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/calling-for-final-peace-settlement-to-israeli-palestinian-conflict-ga-adopts-six-resolutions-on-middle-east-press-release\/\">resolution<\/a> titled, \u201cPeaceful Settlement on the Question of Palestine.\u201d The Canadian government that is keen to present itself as a model, neoliberal, progressive country, even the antithesis to the US\u2019 hawkish policies, voted against a resolution that calls \u201cfor intensified efforts by the parties \u2026 to conclude a final peace settlement\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>If you find such behaviour confusing, then you are not paying attention. Canada has not changed at all. It is our understanding of Canadian foreign policy that has almost always been marred with a true lack of understanding.<\/p>\n<p>And there is a good reason for that. The Canadian government has mastered the art of political branding.
