Janine Jackson: The September 20th Columbus Dispatch ran an op-ed<\/a> from Jim Carroll, identified as \u201cdeputy director of national drug control policy and President Trump\u2019s nominee for drug czar.\u201d Carroll evinced concern for the \u201clives lost\u201d to drug overdoses and empathy for the \u201cloved ones devastated by their loss,\u201d as well as \u201cthose in recovery\u201d\u2014all by way of explaining why he was<\/strong><\/p>\n

in Columbus to meet with law enforcement officers from Ohio and across the Midwest about working together to stop heroin, fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamines and other drugs from entering our communities and ruining people\u2019s lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That immediate recourse to a policing response is writ large in Trump\u2019s \u201ccall to action\u201d on what his administration calls<\/a> the \u201cWorld Drug Problem,\u201d but it doesn\u2019t reflect the direction<\/a> of much of the actual world. So how much impact can that disconnect have?<\/strong><\/p>\n
