But the CAQ\u2019s crude Quebec chauvinist appeals, including its plan to expel immigrants who fail French-language or \u201cQuebec values\u201d tests after three years\u2019 residence, have repelled many voters.<\/p>\n<p>At the last of three debates between the leaders of the four parties represented in the outgoing Quebec National Assembly\u2014the Liberals; CAQ; the big business, pro-Quebec independence Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois (PQ); and the pseudo-left Qu\u00e9bec Solidaire\u2014CAQ head and one-time PQ cabinet minister Fran\u00e7ois Legault soft-peddled his party\u2019s anti-immigrant stance. The Liberal government, he demagogically declared, is the only one that the CAQ wants to expel.<\/p>\n<p>However, Legault couldn\u2019t help himself. When a CAQ supporter asked him Wednesday if he would \u201cfight for us\u201d against immigrants who are \u201ceffacing us,\u201d Legault exclaimed, \u201cYes, of course that\u2019s what we want \u2026 It is a question of protecting who we are as Quebeckers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Liberals, headed by Premier Philippe Couillard, remain the preferred party of government of most of Canadian and Quebec big business.
