{"id":376487,"date":"2018-09-07T19:57:40","date_gmt":"2018-09-07T18:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/new-york-times-covers-up-googles-censorship\/"},"modified":"2018-09-07T19:57:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-07T18:57:40","slug":"new-york-times-covers-up-googles-censorship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/new-york-times-covers-up-googles-censorship\/","title":{"rendered":"New York Times covers up Google\u2019s censorship"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"nomargin\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>New York Times covers up Google\u2019s censorship<\/h2>\n<h5>\n<p>    7 September 2018<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<p> Last September, the <em>New York Times<\/em> published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/26\/technology\/google-search-bias-claims.html\">article<\/a>, appearing on the first page of its business section, reporting allegations by the <em>World Socialist Web Site<\/em> that the internet search monopoly Google was censoring left-wing, anti-war and socialist web sites.<\/p>\n<p> The article prominently cited, and linked to, the WSWS\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2017\/08\/25\/pers-a25.html\">open letter<\/a> to Google, \u201cStop the censorship of the Internet! Stop the political blacklisting of the World Socialist Web Site!\u201d The open letter presented evidence that \u201cGoogle is manipulating its internet searches\u201d in order to \u201cblock news that your company does not want reported and to suppress opinions with which you do not agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> But on Wednesday, the <em>Times<\/em> posted on its website (and published Thursday on the front page of the business section of its Thursday print edition) an article by the same author, Daisuke Wakabayashi, which is a white-wash of Google\u2019s censorship regime, echoing the company\u2019s self-serving denials without any serious examination of the facts.<\/p>\n<p>The article is the latest in a series of similar pieces by major US news outlets, which, using as a foil President Trump\u2019s claims that the company is censoring right-wing news sources, uncritically parrot Google\u2019s denials that it is blacklisting sites based on their political views.<\/p>\n<p>Wakabayashi writes: \u201cGoogle said political ideology was not a factor in any aspect of its search results.
