He defended comments by Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton last January, alleging that Melbourne residents were \u201cscared to go out to restaurants of a night time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turnbull echoed Dutton\u2019s xenophobic assertion, declaring: \u201cI\u2019ve heard people\u2014colleagues from Melbourne\u2014say that there is real anxiety about crime in Melbourne. It is a real issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The manufactured frenzy over supposed \u201cAfrican gangs\u201d is one aspect of a broader attempt by the Liberal-National Coalition, the Labor Party and the corporate media to whip up nationalism, racism and anti-immigrant sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>Turnbull\u2019s comments were a brazen response to growing popular opposition to the \u201cAfrican gangs\u201d propaganda amid further evidence of its bogus character.<\/p>\n<p>On July 8, Channel Seven\u2019s \u201cSunday Night\u201d television program featured an hysterical segment, alleging a conspiracy by the police and government bodies to downplay \u201cAfrican crime\u201d as a result of \u201cpolitical correctness.\u201d This was in line with similar coverage in the Murdoch media\u2019s <em>Australian<\/em> newspaper and its tabloids across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Channel Seven program provided no evidence for its claims. Instead, it focused almost exclusively on two robberies at a single jewellery store in Toorak, Melbourne\u2019s wealthiest suburb.
