{"id":364181,"date":"2018-06-05T21:21:57","date_gmt":"2018-06-05T20:21:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/toronto-star-endorses-ndp-led-government-in-ontario\/"},"modified":"2018-06-05T21:21:57","modified_gmt":"2018-06-05T20:21:57","slug":"toronto-star-endorses-ndp-led-government-in-ontario","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/toronto-star-endorses-ndp-led-government-in-ontario\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto Star endorses NDP-led government in Ontario"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"nomargin\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>Toronto Star endorses NDP-led government in Ontario<\/h2>\n<h5>\n<p>    By<br \/>\n    Keith Jones<br \/>\n    <br \/>5 June 2018<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<p>The <em>Toronto Star<\/em>, the voice of Canada\u2019s liberal establishment, is urging Ontario voters to elect a New Democratic Party (NDP)-led government when they go to the polls this Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>In an editorial titled \u201cOntario voters should back NDP to stop Doug Ford,\u201d the <em>Star<\/em> advocates \u201cstrategic voting,\u201d saying voters should support the candidate from the governing Liberals or the social-democratic NDP with the best chance of defeating the Ford-led Conservative candidate in their specific electoral constituency. \u201cGiven the collapse in Liberal support,\u201d continues the <em>Star<\/em>, this means in \u201cmost parts of the province\u201d that \u201cprogressive voters should back the NDP candidate to make sure Ford doesn\u2019t reach the premier\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Star\u2019s<\/em> endorsement underlines that an important faction of Canada\u2019s ruling elite now favors an NDP-led government in the country\u2019s most populous province.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the pseudo-left is trying to manufacture enthusiasm for the NDP, claiming that it represents a \u201cworking class\u201d alternative to the \u201cbosses\u2019 parties\u201d and constitutes a bulwark against the rise of rightwing populism in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>In fact the NDP, like social-democratic parties around the world, long ago trashed its reformist program. For the past three decades, it has served as a vital instrument of the ruling class in imposing austerity and mobilizing support for Canada\u2019s participation in a series of US-led wars and military-strategic offensives.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Star<\/em> speaks for the pro-war, pro-austerity \u201cliberal\u201d faction of Canada\u2019s ruling elite.
