If a new leader is not elected by May 22, new regional elections must be held.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageFull\" style=\"width:480px; oveflow:hidden;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/asset\/8b953978-1f03-4ee5-af71-d7e3d97f063I\/image.jpg?rendition=image480\"  width=\"480\" style=\"width:480px;\" \/><span>The Barcelona demonstration<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Around 315,000 people took part in the demonstration, according to the Catalan municipal police. The organisers\u2014Space for Democracy and Co-existence (Espai Democr\u00e0cia i Conviv\u00e8ncia), which comprises social and cultural groups; the Catalan branches of Spain\u2019s two largest trade unions, the CCOO and the UGT; nationalist political parties; and the pseudo-left Podemos-led coalition Catalonia in Common\u2014all estimated the turnout at 750,000.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstration was held under the slogan, \u201cWe demand the freedom of all politicians and imprisoned leaders, as well as the return of the exiles\u201d\u2014a reference to the nine jailed and seven exiled secessionist leaders who organised the failed independence bid.
