Cooper<br \/>\n    <br \/>16 April 2018<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<p>As thousands of demonstrators chanted and waved signs demanding funding for education, the Republican-dominated Kentucky legislature concluded its 2018 session Friday by overriding Republican Governor Matt Bevin\u2019s vetoes of the Republican budget and tax bills.<\/p>\n<p>The Kentucky Education Association (KEA) hailed the action of the Republican legislature as a \u201cvictory,\u201d even though it leaves in place a budget that attacks teachers and public education. Teachers were being offered a \u201cchoice\u201d between this bill and the governor\u2019s veto of it, which would remove some funding resulting from regressive taxes.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, after most of the demonstrators had left Frankfort, the legislature let stand SB 151 (the \u201csewer bill\u201d), which shifts future teachers\u2019 pensions to market-driven 401(k)-type plans and ends the longstanding inviolability of teachers\u2019 and other public workers\u2019 pensions. It will allow the state government to change or even rescind pensions in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Bevin vilified teachers following a protest Friday at the state capitol in Frankfort, sparking outrage among teachers and others. In his inflammatory statement to the press, Bevin said, \u201cI guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bevin also said children were probably doing drugs or ingesting poison, \u201cbecause they were home alone, because a single parent didn\u2019t have any money to take care of them\u2026 I am offended that people so flippantly disregarded what is truly best for children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bevin\u2019s slanders were pulled straight from the talking points&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2018\/04\/16\/kent-a16.html\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Kentucky teachers denounce governor for saying students were \u201csexually assaulted\u201d due to walkout By J.
