Presenting unproven allegations by intelligence agencies as fact, the project\u2019s web site provocatively states: \u201cMore than 10 million potential voters had access to fake news that were spread on social media. Today we know that there was \u2018Russian meddling\u2019 in [the US presidential] election, precisely by spreading fake news\u2026In Mexico this is not yet a mass phenomenon. And Russian interference is\u2014for now\u2014just a possibility, not a fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In reality, the #Verificado2018 campaign\u2014likely born in the halls of the Pentagon and at CIA headquarters in Langley\u2014is itself damning proof of American imperialism\u2019s own \u201cmeddling\u201d in foreign elections.<\/p>\n<p>Since its launch, many major Mexican and international media outlets have joined the initiative, including <em>El Universal<\/em>, <em>Proceso<\/em>, <em>El Economista<\/em>, <em>Forbes<\/em>, <em>Al Jazeera Espa\u00f1ol<\/em>, the <em>Huffington Post<\/em>, and <em>Buzzfeed News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In line with similar efforts to censor social media internationally, #Verificado2018 has the direct backing of Facebook, Google, and Twitter, and thereby the military-intelligence agencies of American imperialism&#8230;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2018\/04\/05\/mexi-a05.html\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Ahead of Mexican elections, social media companies, corporate press launch censorship operation By Alex Gonz\u00e1lez 5 April 2018 Over 60 Mexican media organizations, universities, and civil organizations have launched an initiative to crack down on \u201cfake news\u201d regarding the upcoming July 1 Mexican general elections.
