{"id":347247,"date":"2018-02-07T23:02:33","date_gmt":"2018-02-07T22:02:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/trumps-chief-of-staff-mocks-young-immigrants-as-afraid-and-lazy-as-daca-deadline-approaches\/"},"modified":"2018-02-07T23:02:33","modified_gmt":"2018-02-07T22:02:33","slug":"trumps-chief-of-staff-mocks-young-immigrants-as-afraid-and-lazy-as-daca-deadline-approaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/trumps-chief-of-staff-mocks-young-immigrants-as-afraid-and-lazy-as-daca-deadline-approaches\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s chief of staff mocks young immigrants as \u201cafraid\u201d and \u201clazy\u201d as DACA deadline approaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"nomargin\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>Trump\u2019s chief of staff mocks young immigrants as \u201cafraid\u201d and \u201clazy\u201d as DACA deadline approaches<\/h2>\n<h5>\n<p>    By<br \/>\n    Eric London<br \/>\n    <br \/>7 February 2018<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<p>The anti-immigrant charade playing out in Washington on the eve of the February 8 deadline for a federal budget deal gives a sense of the xenophobic climate that will follow from whatever right-wing agreement the two parties reach on immigration.<\/p>\n<p>After a meeting with Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell yesterday, Trump\u2019s Chief of Staff John Kelly denounced 1.1 million immigrant youth who did not sign up for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), calling them \u201ctoo afraid\u201d or \u201ctoo lazy to get off their asses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly made these statements after denouncing the DACA program, which covers roughly 800,000 of the 1.9 million undocumented young people brought to the United States in their childhoods, calling it \u201cunconstitutional.\u201d Trump would not extend the program beyond the March 5 deadline, at which point recipients will face deportation, Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p>This deadline is fast approaching, and President Trump indicated yesterday that he was willing to provoke a shutdown to secure far right-wing anti-immigration proposals in any appropriations deal. \u201cI\u2019d love to see a shutdown if we can\u2019t get this stuff taken care of,\u201d Trump said at a roundtable meeting highlighting the dangers of the Salvadoran gang MS-13 in an attempt to portray immigrants as criminals.<\/p>\n<p>If \u201cwe don\u2019t have a wall, we\u2019re never going to solve this problem,\u201d he said yesterday, referring to MS-13. \u201cI would shut it down over this issue. If we don\u2019t straighten out our border, we don\u2019t have a country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Employing a term usually reserved for the subject of fishing, Trump said, \u201cThey just come in so far, so easy.
