In a country traditionally seen in the post-World War II period as part of Western Europe, where anti-fascism became a pillar of the official state ideology following the crimes of Hitler\u2019s Third Reich, politicians with close ties to the neo-Nazi scene and ultra-right circles are wielding power. The police, military and intelligence services are all controlled by FP\u00d6 ministers.<\/p>\n<p>When the conservative Austrian People\u2019s Party (\u00d6VP) first formed a coalition government 17 years ago with the FP\u00d6, led at the time by J\u00f6rg Haider, it provoked an international wave of protest and outrage. The European Union imposed sanctions on Vienna. This time around, nothing of the kind has taken place. Instead, the new government has been met with praise and support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FP\u00d6 has joined the mainstream of European politics,\u201d wrote Vienna\u2019s <em>Der Standard<\/em>. The Swiss <em>Neue Z\u00fcrcher Zeitung<\/em> described the government\u2019s program as \u201cright-wing conservative with a few symbolic policies, but overall solid and with good approaches.\u201d For the <em>Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em>, the new government is \u201cfirst of all a degree of democratic normality.\u201d It is not necessary to like the government, the newspaper adds, \u201cbut it should be respected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Die Welt<\/em> opined that there is no benefit to \u201cpillorying Austria\u2019s new government.\u201d It should be \u201cgiven a chance.\u201d The newspaper advised Europe to \u201creact calmly,\u201d adding, \u201cAustria is not on the edge of the abyss, as we hear from the left.\u201d Germany\u2019s government spokesman declared that Chancellor Angela Merkel and the German government as a&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2017\/12\/19\/pers-d19.html\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Far-right party enters Austrian government 19 December 2017 The entry Monday of the far-right Freedom Party (FP\u00d6) into the Austrian government marks a political turning point for all of Europe.
