{"id":316182,"date":"2017-07-07T02:05:47","date_gmt":"2017-07-07T01:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/new-york-times-backs-calls-for-catalan-independence-referendum\/"},"modified":"2017-07-07T02:05:47","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T01:05:47","slug":"new-york-times-backs-calls-for-catalan-independence-referendum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/new-york-times-backs-calls-for-catalan-independence-referendum\/","title":{"rendered":"New York Times backs calls for Catalan independence referendum"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"nomargin\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>New York Times backs calls for Catalan independence referendum<\/h2>\n<h5>\n<p>    By<br \/>\n    Alejandro L\u00f3pez<br \/>\n    <br \/>6 July 2017<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<p>Barely two weeks after Catalan regional Premier Carles Puigdemont announced a referendum on the independence of Catalonia from Spain in October, the <em>New York Times<\/em> published an editorial in defence of the plebiscite under the title \u201cCatalonia\u2019s Challenge to Spain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s Popular Party (PP) government led by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is adamant that the referendum will not be allowed to take place, branding it an illegal \u201ccoup.\u201d In all likelihood, once the official resolution is passed by the Catalan regional parliament, Spain\u2019s Constitutional Court will annul it, as with a previous resolution fleshing out the secessionist road map approved by the regional parliament in November 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Times<\/em> criticises the PP for its \u201cintransigence\u201d with respect to Catalonia and for \u201cgalvanizing Catalan separatists by putting their leaders on trial \u201cfor the crimes of disobedience and breach of trust\u201d\u2014in 2014 they staged a non-binding independence referendum. Secessionist sentiment, the newspaper adds, has also increased because of the corruption scandal engulfing the PP the instability of its rule, as witnessed by it barely surviving a no-confidence vote on June 14.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Times<\/em>\u2019 recommendation is for the Spanish government to give concessions to the regional Catalan bourgeoisie, which has whipped up Catalan secessionism as a diversion from its own savage austerity measures.
