{"id":31588,"date":"2013-04-22T16:19:48","date_gmt":"2013-04-22T15:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=31588"},"modified":"2013-04-22T16:19:48","modified_gmt":"2013-04-22T15:19:48","slug":"google-fined-again-over-privacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/sicence-technology\/google-fined-again-over-privacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Fined (Again) Over Privacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/germany-google-fined-over-street-view-privacy-70859\" target=\"_blank\">LBC<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Google has been fined by German authorities over claims it illegally collected personal data during its Street View project.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Hamburg data protection office fined the company 145,000 euros (\u00a3124,000) for privacy offences, including the collection of emails, passwords and photos.<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s specially-equipped cars picked up the data from unsecured wireless networks as they took photos of Hamburg&#8217;s streets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Among the information gathered in the drive-bys were significant amounts of personal data of varying quality,&#8221; said the data protection office.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For example emails, passwords, photos and chat protocols were collected.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In my opinion this case constitutes one of the biggest known data protection violations in history,&#8221; said the office&#8217;s chief, Johannes Caspar.<\/p>\n<p>Google co-operated with the investigation and was also ordered to immediately delete all the private information.<\/p>\n<p>The company said the collection of the data was a &#8220;mistake&#8221; and a &#8220;significant lapse of Google&#8217;s internal control mechanisms&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It said the data was never looked at and that it had already deleted it all.<\/p>\n<p>Google was fined $7m (\u00a34.6m) in March this year for a similar incident of &#8216;wi-fi snooping&#8217; while working on Street View in the US.<\/p>\n<p>In that case, Google blamed the intrusion on a rogue engineer who it said had rigged a software programme without its permission.<\/p>\n<p>The technology giant is also facing further scrutiny over its privacy policies elsewhere in the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Six European countries are taking legal action to try to force the tech giant to overhaul its privacy practices.<\/p>\n<p>The claim Google&#8217;s current policy does not allow users to work out which information is kept, how it is combined by Google services or how long the company retains it.<\/p>\n<p>Google insists its policy complies with European laws.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google has been fined by German authorities over claims it illegally collected personal data during its Street View project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":31589,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1614,13,18],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-31588","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-surveillance-big-brother","8":"category-sicence-technology","9":"category-latest-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31588","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=31588"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31588\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/31589"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=31588"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=31588"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=31588"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
