{"id":305939,"date":"2017-04-30T06:50:35","date_gmt":"2017-04-30T05:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/canadian-global-affairs-institute-a-think-tank-driving-militarist-foreign-policy\/"},"modified":"2017-04-30T06:50:35","modified_gmt":"2017-04-30T05:50:35","slug":"canadian-global-affairs-institute-a-think-tank-driving-militarist-foreign-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/canadian-global-affairs-institute-a-think-tank-driving-militarist-foreign-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Global Affairs Institute: A Think Tank Driving Militarist Foreign Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A registered \u201ccharity\u201d with buckets of donations from arms manufacturers and other corporate sources is aggressively trying to push Canadian foreign policy further towards militarism and the use of violence.<\/p>\n<p>And the right wing Canadian Global Affairs Institute seems to be growing in influence, or at least media prominence.<\/p>\n<p>Since last month\u2019s federal budget senior CGAI analyst David Perry has been quoted throughout the media arguing for increased military spending. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/m\/touch\/politics\/story\/1.4035424\">I\u2019m stunned<\/a> this budget is actually taking money away from the military and pretending to give it back several decades in the future,\u201d Perry\u00a0told CBC.<\/p>\n<p>In its reports, conferences and commentary the Calgary-based institute promotes aggressive, militarist positions. In the midst of a wave of criticism towards General Dynamics\u2019s sale of Light Armoured Vehicles to Saudi Arabia, CGAI published a paper titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cgai.ca\/canada_and_saudi_arabia\">Canada and Saudi Arabia<\/a>: A Deeply Flawed but Necessary Partnership\u201d\u00a0that defended the $15-billion deal. At least four of the General Dynamics-funded institute\u2019s \u201cfellows\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/politics\/think-tank-under-fire-for-accepting-donations-from-arms-maker\/article31086389\/\">wrote<\/a> columns justifying the sale, including an opinion Perry published in the <em>Globe and Mail<\/em> Report on Business titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/report-on-business\/rob-commentary\/without-foreign-arms-sales-canadas-defence-industry-would-not-survive\/article28100442\/\">Without foreign<\/a> sales, Canada\u2019s defence industry would not survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previously, CGAI has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfai.org.previewmysite.com\/PDF\/CFIS.pdf\">called<\/a> for Ottawa to set up a foreign spy service \u2014 think CIA, M-16 or Mossad.
