{"id":29910,"date":"2013-03-11T10:54:10","date_gmt":"2013-03-11T09:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=29910"},"modified":"2013-03-11T11:06:32","modified_gmt":"2013-03-11T10:06:32","slug":"civilian-torture-and-human-rights-abuse-rife-in-iraq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/war-terrorism\/civilian-torture-and-human-rights-abuse-rife-in-iraq\/","title":{"rendered":"Civilian Torture And Human Rights Abuse Rife In Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rinf.com\"><strong>RINF Alternative News<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29911\" alt=\"iraq-torture-prison\" src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/iraq-torture-prison.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/iraq-torture-prison.jpg 480w, https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/iraq-torture-prison-75x56.jpg 75w, https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/iraq-torture-prison-133x100.jpg 133w, https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/iraq-torture-prison-383x287.jpg 383w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A new report released today has found that 10 years after the\u00a0US-led invasion,\u00a0Iraq remains \u201cenmeshed in a grim cycle of human rights abuses, including attacks on civilians, torture of detainees and unfair trials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news follows on from a damning investigation which\u00a0last week revealed <a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/latest-news\/pentagon-implicated-in-iraq-torture-units\/29755\/\" target=\"_blank\">the\u00a0Pentagon sent high ranking\u00a0officials<\/a>\u00a0to manage\u00a0secret detention and torture units in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the Amnesty International report, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/library\/asset\/MDE14\/001\/2013\/en\/bbd876ee-aa83-4a63-bff3-7e7c6ee130eb\/mde140012013en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Iraq: A Decade of Abuses<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0highlights a\u00a0decade of abuse\u00a0by Iraqi security forces and foreign troops who show\u00a0callous disregard for civilian life, their failure to uphold\u00a0human rights, respect the rule of law\u00a0and\u00a0exposes the\u00a0torture and\u00a0ill-treatment of\u00a0detainees.<\/p>\n<p>Torture methods include beatings,\u00a0suffocation,\u00a0electric shocks; including to the genitals; and\u00a0deprivation of food, water and sleep.<\/p>\n<p>The report says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Thousands of Iraqis are detained without trial or are serving prison sentences imposed after unfair trials, torture remains rife and continues to be committed with impunity, and the new Iraq is one of the world\u2019s leading executioners.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Detainees are being tortured as a means of forcing them to &#8216;confess&#8217; to crimes or to incriminate others.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn December 2011, Iraqi TV stations broadcast testimonies of at least three detained former bodyguards of the office of Vice President Tareq al-Hasemi in which they accuse him of ordering them to murder government and security officials.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>447 prisoners have been executed since 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Last year the government hanged 129 prisoners and currently holds 37,000,\u00a0of whom 21,000 have been sentenced,\u00a0making the country\u00a0one of the world\u2019s leading executioners.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTen years after the end of Saddam Hussein\u2019s repressive rule, many Iraqis today enjoy greater freedoms than they did under his Ba\u2019athist regime, but the fundamental human rights gains that should have been achieved during the past decade have signally failed to materialize,\u201d said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director at Amnesty International.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither the Iraqi government nor the former occupying powers have adhered to the standards required of them under international law and the people of Iraq are still paying a heavy price for their failure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeath sentences and executions are being used on a horrendous scale,\u201d said Hadj Sahraoui, \u201cIt is particularly abhorrent that many prisoners have been sentenced to death after unfair trials and on the basis of confessions they say they were forced to make under torture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is high time that the Iraqi authorities end this appalling cycle of abuse and declare a moratorium on executions as a first step towards abolishing the death penalty for all crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIraq remains caught in a cycle of torture and impunity that should long ago have been broken.
