(graphic: Sofie Louise Dam, The Nib)\" width=\"350\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>(graphic: Sofie Louise Dam, <a href=\"https:\/\/thenib.com\/inmates-are-planning-the-largest-prison-strike-in-us-history\"><strong>The Nib<\/strong><\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>On September 9, the 45th anniversary of the Attica prison uprising, inmate laborers at 40 prisons in 24 states across the country went on strike (<b>The Root<\/b>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theroot.com\/articles\/news\/2016\/09\/endprisonslavery-attica-prison-strike\/\">9\/10\/16<\/a>). <b>The<\/b> <b>Nation<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/this-week-may-see-the-largest-prison-strike-in-us-history\/\">(9\/7\/16)<\/a>, <b>Guardian <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2016\/sep\/09\/us-nationwide-prison-strike-alabama-south-carolina-texas\">(9\/9\/16)<\/a>, <b>Wired <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/linkis.com\/www.wired.com\/2016\/0\/v5ZaU\">(9\/3\/16)<\/a> and <b>Waging Nonviolence <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/feature\/inmates-organizing-nationwide-strike-behind-bars\/\">(9\/7\/16)<\/a> all reported that this may have been the largest prison strike in history.<\/p>\n<p>But a search of the Nexis news database for the terms \u201cprison\u201d and \u201cstrike\u201d showed that most national corporate news outlets thought that the potential of history being made on September 9 needed little to no news coverage. <b>CBS<\/b> <strong>Money Watch<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/why-prisoners-nationwide-are-striking\/\">(9\/9\/16)<\/a> actually had a substantive report by Aimee Picchi, who noted that, &#8220;Aside from the low or nonexistent pay, the strikers say they object to the use of violence or punishments if they don\u2019t perform as well as their jailers expect.&#8221; Picchi quoted a <a href=\"https:\/\/iwoc.noblogs.org\/post\/2016\/04\/01\/announcement-of-nationally-coordinated-prisoner-workstoppage-for-sept-9-2016\/\">statement<\/a> from the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Overseers watch over our every move, and if we do not perform our appointed tasks to their liking, we are punished. They may have replaced the whip with pepper spray, but many of the other torments remain: isolation, restraint positions, stripping off our clothes and investigating our bodies as though we are animals.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But other national outlets, including the other broadcast networks <b>ABC<\/b> and <b>NBC<\/b>; the leading cable news channels, <b>Fox News<\/b>, <b>CNN<\/b> and <b>MSNBC<\/b>; the public networks, <b>PBS <\/b>and <b>NPR<\/b>; and prominent newspapers like the <b>New York Times<\/b>, <b>Washington Post<\/b> and <b>USA Today<\/b>, offered no coverage of the prison strike.<\/p>\n<p>A few stories on the strike appeared in local newspapers, including the <b>Philadelphia Inquirer<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/news\/new_jersey\/20160910_Activist_calls_for_reduced_inmate_populations_in_N_J_.html\">9\/10\/16<\/a>), <b>Miami Herald<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/article100874582.html\">9\/9\/16<\/a>), <b>Montgomery Advertiser<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.montgomeryadvertiser.com\/story\/news\/2016\/09\/09\/inmate-worker-strike-reported-holman\/90138610\/\">9\/9\/16<\/a>) and <b>Birmingham News<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/birmingham\/index.ssf\/2016\/09\/nearly_4_dozen_inmates_at_alab.html\">9\/9\/16<\/a>). Activist outlets like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maskmagazine.com\/the-prisoner-issue\/struggle\/live-updates-prisoner-strike\">Mask Magazine<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/itsgoingdown.org\/prisonstrike-resistance-to-slavery-across-the-world\/\">It&#8217;s Going Down!<\/a><\/strong> released updates and tallied acts of solidarity.<\/p>\n<p>Outlets that covered the strike noted that inmates sought improved prison conditions. Temperatures in Texas prisons have have been known to reach 150 Fahrenheit (<b>The<\/b> <b>Nation<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/this-week-may-see-the-largest-prison-strike-in-us-history\/\">9\/7\/16)<\/a>, while in other states, inmates are forced to work at recycling facilities and fight fires while receiving little to no pay (<b>Waging Nonviolence, <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/feature\/inmates-organizing-nationwide-strike-behind-bars\/\">9\/7\/16<\/a>). Some reports (like a Sofie Louise Dam&#8217;s graphic essay in <strong>The Nib<\/strong>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/thenib.com\/inmates-are-planning-the-largest-prison-strike-in-us-history\">9\/8\/16<\/a>) pointed out that because the 13th Amendment banned slavery &#8220;except as punishment for crime,&#8221; forced prison labor is not merely similar to slavery, it is a literal continuation of the antebellum slave system.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers for the strike have also made connections between prison labor and unions. <b>Wired <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/linkis.com\/www.wired.com\/2016\/0\/v5ZaU\">(9\/3\/16)<\/a> reported organizers are \u201cquick to point out that relying on cheap prison labor takes jobs away from those outside\u2014but so far response from outside organizations like labor unions has been tepid.\u201d Most corporate media outlets, meanwhile, would have to increase their level of response considerably to qualify as \u201ctepid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Correction:<\/strong> An earlier version of this post said that the <strong>Wall Street Journal<\/strong> had no coverage of the prison strike; it ran a piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/prisoners-stage-coordinated-strikes-in-several-states-1473895389\">September 14<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>While we didn&#8217;t intend our list of alternative media coverage to be exhaustive, <strong>The Influence<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/theinfluence.org\/a-call-to-action-against-slavery-why-were-about-to-see-the-largest-prison-strikes-in-us-history\/\">8\/9\/16<\/a>) had a report that was noteworthy for coming a full month before the strike.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Rohit Chandan is an editorial intern at FAIR.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This piece was reprinted by <a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\">RINF Alternative News<\/a> with permission from <a href=\"http:\/\/fair.org\/home\/nationwide-prison-strike-mostly-ignored-by-national-media\/\">FAIR<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(graphic: Sofie Louise Dam, The Nib) On September 9, the 45th anniversary of the Attica prison uprising, inmate laborers at 40 prisons in 24 states across the country went on strike (The Root, 9\/10\/16).
