{"id":263545,"date":"2016-08-24T16:35:52","date_gmt":"2016-08-24T16:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/45-yrs-ago-this-week-a-memo-launched-the-corporate-takeover-of-the-us-govt\/"},"modified":"2016-08-24T20:05:54","modified_gmt":"2016-08-24T20:05:54","slug":"45-yrs-ago-this-week-a-memo-launched-the-corporate-takeover-of-the-us-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/latest-news\/45-yrs-ago-this-week-a-memo-launched-the-corporate-takeover-of-the-us-govt\/","title":{"rendered":"45 yrs ago this week, a memo launched the corporate takeover of the US govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2016.08\/thumbnail\/57bcad9ec46188ba418b457e.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        Forty-five years ago this week, a single memo written by Lewis Powell kicked off the corporate takeover of the US government and inspired a generation of think tanks, lobbyists, and dirty money.&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The conservative corporate lawyer, who would later be appointed to the US Supreme Court by Republican President Richard Nixon, wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/democracy\/the-lewis-powell-memo-a-corporate-blueprint-to-dominate-democracy\/\">memo<\/a> to the US Chamber of Commerce\u2019s Eugene Sydnor, putting forth a plan to tackle the environmental and civil rights movements which were pushing for more health and safety regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Powell was addressing concerns held by conservatives surrounding the New Deal and the Great Society, which included Social Security, the Labor Relations Act, Medicare, Medicaid, and anti-discrimination laws.<\/p>\n<p>In his memo, he said it was time to fight back against the <em>&#8220;Attack of the American Free Enterprise System&#8221;<\/em> from <em>\u201cperfectly respectable elements of society\u201d<\/em> like the <em>\u201ccollege campus, the pulpit, the media, the intellectual and literary journals, the arts and sciences and from politicians.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Describing them as being the most articulate, the most vocal, and the most prolific in their writing and speaking, Powell said,<em> \u201cStrength lies in organization, in careful long-range planning and implementation, in consistency of action over an indefinite period of years, in the scale of financing available only through joint effort, and in the political power available only through united action and national organizations.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Colleges were targeted for their liberal teachings, with Powell calling for <em>\u201cconstructive action\u201d<\/em> to include staffing colleges with those who<em> \u201cbelieve in the system\u201d<\/em>, applying pressure to ensure the right sort of speakers appear on campus, and keeping textbooks <em>\u201cunder constant surveillance.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The memo called for business to play <em>\u201ca broader and more vigorous role in the political arena\u201d<\/em> through campaign financing and advertising.<\/p>\n<p>Powell pointed to the fact that much of the media <em>\u201care owned and theoretically controlled by corporations which depend upon profits, and the enterprise system to survive.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He called for monitoring of media content, the challenging of media outlets critical to their views and making complaints against said outlets.<\/p>\n<p>The late justice lamented the fact that newsstands had <em>\u201calmost no attractive, well-written paperbacks or pamphlets on \u2018our side.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For Powell, the Chamber of Commerce held a vital role due to its <em>\u201cstrategic position.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Having fought the government on behalf of the Tobacco Institute to prevent warnings about the dangers of smoking, he highlighted the courts as being a<em> \u201cvast area of opportunity.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two months later, he would be appointed to the top court in the country by President Nixon. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Powell recognized that businessmen were not <em>\u201ctrained or equipped to conduct guerrilla warfare with those who propagandize against the system,\u201d<\/em> but called for the <em>\u201cwisdom, ingenuity and resources of American business to be marshaled against those who would destroy it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Influenced by his memo, corporate activists and the Chamber began to build institutions to change public opinions.
