Says: &#8216;July 2015 was warmest month ever recorded for the globe&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Eric Zuesse<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To global-warming-deniers such as the Koch brothers and Exxon\/Mobil, the news that was reported on 20 August 2015 must be just a \u2018coincidence,\u2019 but the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported then that July 2015 was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/sotc\/summary-info\/global\/201507\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cthe all-time highest monthly temperature\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in this planet\u2019s entire scientifically recorded record, which started in 1880.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Furthermore: &#8220;Global oceans record warm for July; January-July\u00a02015 also record warm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/sotc\/global\/201507\"><span class=\"s4\">more detailed version of the report<\/span><\/a>\u00a0says:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>The combined average temperature over\u00a0global land and ocean surfaces for July 2015\u00a0was the highest for July in the 136-year period\u00a0of record, at 0.81\u00b0C (1.46\u00b0F) above the 20th\u00a0century average of 15.8\u00b0C (60.4\u00b0F), surpassing\u00a0the previous record set in 1998 by 0.08\u00b0C\u00a0(0.14\u00b0F). As July is climatologically the\u00a0warmest month of the year globally, this\u00a0monthly global temperature of 16.61\u00b0C\u00a0(61.86\u00b0F) was also the highest among all 1627\u00a0months in the record that began in January\u00a01880. The July temperature is currently\u00a0increasing at an average rate\u00a0of 0.65\u00b0C\u00a0(1.17\u00b0F) per century.\u00a0\u2026<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>For the oceans, the July global sea surface\u00a0temperature was 0.75\u00b0C (1.35\u00b0F) above the\u00a020th\u00a0century average of 16.4\u00b0C (61.5\u00b0F), the\u00a0highest departure not only for July, but for any\u00a0month on record. The10 highest monthly\u00a0departures from average for the oceans\u00a0have\u00a0all occurred in the past 16 months (since April\u00a02014).<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Back on June 4th, NOAA had reported, in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/348\/6242\/1469\"><span class=\"s2\">a refereed article published in the leading scientific journal, <i>Science<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(which is published by the American Academy for the Advancement of Science), that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>an updated global surface temperature\u00a0analysis &#8230; reveals that global trends are\u00a0higher than those reported by the Intergovernmental Panel\u00a0on Climate\u00a0Change,\u00a0especially in recent decades, and that the\u00a0central estimate for the rate of warming during the first 15 years of\u00a0the 21st\u00a0century is at least as great as the last half of\u00a0the 20th century. These results do not support the notion of a\u00a0\u201cslowdown\u201d\u00a0in the increase of global\u00a0surface temperature.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As is typical for academic scientific articles, this one understated what was actually found. What was actually found is simply inconsistent with the notion of a \u2018slowdown\u2019 in the increase of global surface temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here is how the NOAA research-team itself summarized their findings in a press release from NOAA on June 4th, which was titled,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaanews.noaa.gov\/stories2015\/noaa-analysis-journal-science-no-slowdown-in-global-warming-in-recent-years.html\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cData show no recent slowdown in global warming\u201d<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>A\u00a0new study\u00a0published online today in the journal\u00a0Science\u00a0finds that the rate of global warming during the last 15 years has been as fast as or\u00a0faster than that seen during the latter half of the 20th\u00a0Century. The study refutes the notion that there has been a slowdown or &#8220;hiatus&#8221; in the\u00a0rate of global warming in recent years.\u00a0\u2026<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change&#8217;s (IPCC)\u00a0Fifth Assessment Report, released in stages between September 2013 and\u00a0November 2014, concluded that the upward global surface temperature trend from 1998\u00ad\u00ad-2012 was markedly lower than the trend from 1951-2012.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Since the release of the IPCC report, NOAA scientists have made significant improvements in the calculation of trends.\u00a0\u2026 The calculations also\u00a0use improved versions of both sea surface temperature and land surface air temperature datasets. One of the most substantial improvements\u00a0is a correction that accounts for the difference in data collected from buoys and ship-based data.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Science is constantly improving its methods, and, consequently, the accuracy of its observations. These changes in the findings are not the result of errors; they are the result of progress \u2013 progress (improvements) in the methodology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As I had noted on August 20th, headlining\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/editorials\/the-latest-science-on-global-warming\/\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8220;The Latest Science on Global Warming,\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0the latest findings on global warming are \u201cbleak.\u201d The heat-up of this planet has been consistently under-estimated by scientists; it has consistently turned out to be at the extreme high end of the Bell curve of likelihoods of where we are heading. We are heading into catastrophe faster than has been projected by scientists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">People who deny that global warming even exists are a combination of liars and their suckers, because the scientific evidence on the question is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/1748-9326\/8\/2\/024024\/article\"><span class=\"s2\">clear and overwhelming.<\/span><\/a> And people who speculate that global warming will be good not bad are insane.
