{"id":144903,"date":"2015-03-23T21:28:19","date_gmt":"2015-03-23T21:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=144903"},"modified":"2015-03-23T21:29:28","modified_gmt":"2015-03-23T21:29:28","slug":"youre-being-lied-to-gmo-labelling-will-not-make-food-more-expensive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/latest-news\/youre-being-lied-to-gmo-labelling-will-not-make-food-more-expensive\/","title":{"rendered":"You&#8217;re being lied to &#8211; GMO labelling will NOT make food more expensive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tomorrow morning, the House Agriculture Committee will hold a <a href=\"http:\/\/agriculture.house.gov\/hearing\/full-committee-agriculture-%E2%80%93-public-hearing-mandatory-biotechnology-laws\">hearing<\/a> on the impact of GMO labeling on food prices.<\/p>\n<p>Several witnesses will raise their hands and give sworn testimony that a simple disclosure on the back of a package that food made with genetically modified ingredients will raise food prices.<\/p>\n<p>All of them will be wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the truth: changing labels has no impact on the price of food. Food companies change their labels all the time to highlight innovations or make new claims. Remember when General Mills changed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ewg.org\/enviroblog\/2014\/01\/cheerios-new-non-gmo-label-tests-food-industry-claims-labeling\">Cheerios<\/a> box to share the good news that its iconic cereal was GMO-free? Did the price change? No.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s another dose of reality: Shoppers do not read everything on the box, can or bottle. As my colleague Mike Lavender recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ewg.org\/agmag\/2013\/09\/shoppers-want-know-even-if-labels-rarely-change-their-minds\">noted<\/a>, shoppers tend to look for certain attributes \u2014 like calories or the presence of fiber \u2014 and disregard the rest.
