The Kremlin has been negotiating significant trade deals with two giants in the region for years now, with the prospect of a new geopolitical reality emerging if Russia, Iran and China continue to forge stronger ties into the future<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color: black;\">At the beginning of August,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/newsbysector\/energy\/oilandgas\/11014604\/Vladimir-Putin-signs-historic-20bn-oil-deal-with-Iran-to-bypass-Western-sanctions.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: purple;\">Russia and Iran signed a historic $20 billion oil deal<\/span><\/a>\u00a0which will see the two nations enhancing cooperation within the \u201coil and gas industry\u201d, in addition to strengthening economic collaboration. The deal proposes that Russia will assist Tehran in developing its energy infrastructure along with purchasing Iranian oil, in exchange for Iran importing consumer goods and agriculture products including wheat, leather, pulses and meat. Further talks are set to take place at the\u00a0Russia-Iran intergovernmental commission meeting in Tehran on September 9-10,\u00a0which will see the details of the deal cemented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color: black;\">Relations between the two nations are complex and have ranged from collaborative to hostile in the last few decades, with a degree of tension existing between Moscow and Tehran over many issues today. The Caspian Sea is one dispute that has strained relations between the five bordering countries since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990\u2019s. Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are unable to agree on the legal portion owned by each state, in a sea which is home to vast deposits of oil and gas. Iran has also been displeased by Russia\u2019s support of United Nations Security Council Resolutions which have\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/News\/Press\/docs\/2010\/sc9948.doc.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: purple;\">imposed sanctions on Iran<\/span><\/a>\u00a0over the past decade, stunting the development of the Iranian economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color: black;\">Yet the two nations have increasingly found themselves sharing the same geostrategic interests, especially in their support of Bashar al-Assad in his fight against western sponsored proxy forces in Syria. A closer strategic alliance with\u00a0Iran could also benefit Russia through Tehran providing regional assistance to help stabilise the Caucasus and Central Asia. A vast amount of terrorist cells \u2014 which have\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/washingtons-civil-society-and-cia-financing-of-chechen-and-other-caucasus-regional-terrorists\/5333359\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: purple;\">close links to the CIA<\/span><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; have been active in the Caucasus for years now, in an effort to destabilise the underbelly of the Russia Federation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\" align=\"center\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color: black;\">A Resource Rich Alliance<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color: black;\">The strength of Iran and Russia is underpinned by the two powers holding considerable deposits of oil and gas, and an increase in cooperation between Tehran and Moscow could be mutually beneficial considering the sanctions imposed on each state. Iran is a natural dominant player in the Middle East as it has the \u201c<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/countries\/cab.cfm?fips=ir\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: purple;\">fourth-largest proved crude oil reserves<\/span><\/a>\u201d on earth, along with the \u201cworld\u2019s second-largest natural gas reserves\u201d, in addition to having the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0largest population in the region \u2014 of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/library\/publications\/the-world-factbook\/rankorder\/2119rank.html?countryname=Iran&amp;countrycode=ir&amp;regionCode=mde&amp;rank=19#ir\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: purple;\">over 80 million<\/span><\/a>. Russia holds the largest natural gas reserves in the world along with the eighth largest proved crude oil reserves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color: black;\">Moscow could be an essential importer of Iranian oil as the latest round of sanctions, imposed by the United States (US) and the European Union (EU) in 2011\/2012, have had a sizable affect on the production and revenues received from the Iranian energy sector. Export revenues from oil and gas have plunged by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/countries\/cab.cfm?fips=IR\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: purple;\">47% in the fiscal year 2012\/2013 to $63 billion<\/span><\/a>, according to the IMF, compared to an export revenue of $118 billion the previous year. Russia has also announced it will build a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/iran-times.com\/exasperated-russians-to-build-rail-line-inside-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: purple;\">rail line in the North of Iran<\/span><\/a>, running from the city of Rasht on the Caspian Sea to Astara on the Azerbaijan border.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color: black;\">The decision by western leaders to impose sanctions on Russia in March has pushed Moscow closer to Iran and China, as well as strengthening the BRICS group and the Eurasian Economic Community. In May, Russia and China agreed what was hailed by many analysts as the \u2018deal of the decade\u2019; when the two powers signed a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2014-05-21\/russia-and-china-finally-sign-400-billion-holy-grail-gas-deal\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: purple;\">30 year gas deal totalling $400 billion<\/span><\/a>. China and Iran also plan to boost trade over the next 10 years by a factor of 5, with trade expected to reach\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.presstv.com\/detail\/2014\/03\/03\/353028\/iran-china-set-200bn-trade-target\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: purple;\">$200 billion<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by 2024, compared to $40 billion in 2013.
