Apparently, he&#8217;s softening up the public for the imminent release of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #9c162e;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2014\/07\/26\/cia-torture-report-coming-soon.html\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Intelligence Committee&#8217;s investigation<\/a>\u00a0of the CIA. The Committee&#8217;s report &#8220;will reveal new and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #9c162e;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2014\/07\/31\/cia-torture-report-won-t-call-interrogations-torture-but-it-will-show-horrors.html\" target=\"_blank\">shocking details<\/a>\u00a0about the CIA&#8217;s detention, rendition and interrogation program in the years following the 9\/11 attacks,&#8221; according to people who have seen or been briefed on the report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The media, in classic form, is distracting the public from the actual issue of torture by focusing on the issue of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #9c162e;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/jul\/31\/cia-admits-spying-senate-staffers\" target=\"_blank\">CIA spying<\/a>\u00a0on the Senate. However, internal disputes between the Senate and the executive branch are irrelevant, because both are complicit in torture. For example, immediately after 9\/11, Speaker of the House\u00a0<a style=\"color: #9c162e;\" href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/capitol-briefing\/2009\/05\/cia_says_pelosi_was_briefed_on.html\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy Pelosi was fully briefed<\/a>\u00a0on the use of so-called &#8220;harsh interrogation techniques&#8221; &#8211; what Obama now identifies as &#8220;torture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Predictably, John Yoo, a lawyer and adviser of President George W. Bush, is already part of this debate, stating that his &#8220;<a style=\"color: #9c162e;\" href=\"http:\/\/ricochet.com\/quick-thought-cia-senate-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\">general sympathies<\/a>&#8221; are with the CIA. That is not surprising since John Yoo&#8217;s fingerprints are all over the legal memoranda allegedly justifying techniques Obama now identifies as torture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Yoo was the principal\u00a0<a style=\"color: #9c162e;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2012\/08\/04\/ten-years-of-torture-marking-the-10th-anniversary-of-john-yoos-torture-memos\/\" target=\"_blank\">author on the memoranda<\/a>\u00a0that allegedly provided the legal basis for the CIA&#8217;s use of enhanced interrogation\/torture immediately after 9\/11.
