{"id":128905,"date":"2014-07-08T20:01:15","date_gmt":"2014-07-08T20:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=128905"},"modified":"2014-07-08T20:15:01","modified_gmt":"2014-07-08T20:15:01","slug":"smart-lightbulbs-reveal-wi-fi-passwords","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/sicence-technology\/smart-lightbulbs-reveal-wi-fi-passwords\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Smart\u2019 Lightbulbs Reveal Wi-Fi Passwords"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Researchers have found a way to reveal Wi-Fi passwords by hacking mobile phone controlled LED \u201csmart\u201d lights.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-subtitle\" style=\"font-weight: 500;\"><em>Hackers uncover yet another &#8220;Internet of things&#8221; vulnerability<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mikeal Thalen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #025ab4;\" href=\"http:\/\/lifx.co\/\">LIFX lightbulb<\/a>, yet another addition to the \u201cInternet of things,\u201d allows a user to remotely change a network-connected bulb\u2019s color and strength from a computer or cell phone.<\/p>\n<p>White-hat hackers with the UK-based security firm Context\u00a0<a style=\"color: #025ab4;\" href=\"http:\/\/contextis.com\/blog\/hacking-internet-connected-light-bulbs\/\" target=\"_blank\">released their findings<\/a>\u00a0this week after successfully obtaining Wi-Fi credentials from 30 meters away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArmed with knowledge of the encryption algorithm, key, initialization vector and an understanding of the mesh network protocol we could then inject packets into the mesh network, capture the WiFi details and decrypt the credentials, all without any prior authentication or alerting of our presence,\u201d Context said.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery highlights the inherent danger in having countless home appliances connected to the Internet \u2014 as experts predict as many as 50 such devices in the average home by 2022 . Other lights such as the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #025ab4;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meethue.com\/en-US\" target=\"_blank\">Phillips Hue<\/a>\u00a0were successfully hacked last year as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeaknesses in a popular brand of light system controlled by computers and smartphones can be exploited by attackers to cause blackouts that are remedied only by removing the wireless device that receives the commands\u2026\u201d noted\u00a0<a style=\"color: #025ab4;\" href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/security\/2013\/08\/philips-hue-lights-malware-hack\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ars Technica<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While LIFX has reportedly\u00a0<a style=\"color: #025ab4;\" href=\"http:\/\/updates.lifx.co\/\" target=\"_blank\">fixed their vulnerability<\/a>, Phillips disagreed that theirs was an issue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.storyleak.com\/smart-lightbulbs-reveal-wi-fi-passwords\/\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers have found a way to reveal Wi-Fi passwords by hacking mobile phone controlled LED \u201csmart\u201d lights.
