According to legend, Iran&#8217;s President has threatened to destroy Israel, or, to quote the misquote, <strong>\u201cIsrael must be wiped off the map\u201d. Contrary to popular belief, this statement was never made<\/strong>, \u2026\u201d (Arash Norouzi, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/israel-wiped-off-the-map-the-rumor-of-the-century-fabricated-by-the-us-media-to-justify-an-all-out-war-on-iran\/21188\">Wiped off  The Map: The Rumor of the Century <\/a>  January 2007)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>The United States has attacked, directly or indirectly, some 44 countries throughout the world since August 1945,<\/strong> a number of them many times. The avowed objective of these military interventions has been to effect \u201cregime change\u201d. The cloaks of \u201chuman rights\u201d and of \u201cdemocracy\u201d were invariably evoked to justify what were unilateral and illegal acts<\/em>. (Professor Eric Waddell, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/the-united-states-global-military-crusade-1945\/4610\"> The United States&#8217; Global Military Crusade (1945- )<\/a>, Global Research, February 2007<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>This is a [Pentagon] memo that describes how we&#8217;re going to take out seven countries in five years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran.\u201d<\/strong> I said, \u201cIs it classified?\u201d He said, \u201cYes, sir.\u201d I said, \u201cWell, don&#8217;t show it to me.\u201d (General Wesley Clark, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/we-re-going-to-take-out-7-countries-in-5-years-iraq-syria-lebanon-libya-somalia-sudan-iran\/5166\">Democracy Now<\/a>, March 2, 2007)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>*         *        *<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is \u201cWiping Countries off the Map\u201d? Iran or the United States?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During a period which is euphemistically called the \u201cpost-war era\u201d \u2014extending from 1945 to the present\u2014, the US has directly or indirectly attacked more than 40 countries.<\/p>\n<p>While the tenets of US foreign policy are predicated on the \u201cspread of democracy\u201d, US interventionism \u2014through military means and covert operations\u2014 has resulted in the outright destabilization and partition of sovereign nations.<\/p>\n<p>Destroying countries is part of a US Imperial project, a process of global domination.  Moreover, according to official sources, the US has a total of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/737-u-s-military-bases-global-empire\/12824\">737 military bases in foreign countries. (2005 data) <\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Notion of \u201cFailed States\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Washington based <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dni.gov\/files\/documents\/GlobalTrends_2030.pdf\">National Intelligence Council (NIC) in its Global Trends report  (December 2012)<\/a>  \u201cpredicts\u201d that 15 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East will become \u201cfailed states\u201d by 2030, due to their \u201cpotential for conflict and environmental ills\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The list of countries in the 2012 NIC report includes Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Chad, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Kenya, Burundi, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Somalia, DR Congo, Malawi, Haiti, Yemen. (see p  39)<\/p>\n<p>In its previous 2005 report, published at the outset of Bush&#8217;s second term, the National Intelligence Council had predicted that Pakistan would become a \u201cfailed&#8217; state\u201d by 2015 \u201cas it will be affected by civil war, complete Talibanisation and struggle for control of its nuclear weapons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan was compared to Yugoslavia which was carved up into seven proxy states after a decade of US-NATO sponsored \u201ccivil wars\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The NIC forecast for Pakistan was a \u201cYugoslav-like fate\u201d in a \u201ccountry riven by civil war, bloodshed and inter-provincial rivalries\u201d (Energy Compass, 2 March 2005).<\/p>\n<p>While the failed states are said to \u201cserve as safehavens for political and religious extremists\u201d (p. 143), the report does not acknowledge the fact that the US and its allies have, since the 1970s, provided covert support to religious extremist organizations as a means to destabilize sovereign secular nation states. Both Pakistan and Afghanistan were secular states in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>A Yugoslav or Somalia-style \u201cfailed state status\u201d is not the result of internal social divisions, it is a strategic objective implemented through covert operations and military action.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Washington based <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fundforpeace.org\/global\/?q=fsi-grid2012\">Fund for Peace<\/a>, whose mandate is to promote \u201csustainable security through research\u201d, publishes (annually) a \u201cFailed States Index\u201d based on a risk assessment (see map below).  Thirty three countries (included in the Alert and Warm categories) are identified as \u201cfailed states\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fundforpeace.org\/global\/?q=fsi-grid2012\">Fund for Peace, the \u201cfailed states\u201d <\/a>are also \u201ctargets for Al Qaeda linked terrorists\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe annual ranking of nations by the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fundforpeace.org\/global\/?q=aboutus\">Fund for Peace<\/a>\/<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/failed_states_index_2012_interactive\">Foreign Policy<\/a> for failing\/fragile-state trouble-signs comes as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/07\/14\/africa-security-mali-qaeda-idINDEE86D04720120714\">international alarm<\/a> grows about al-Qaeda-linked extremists setting up a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/news\/Qaida+cancer+Mali\/6956956\/story.html\">state-based sanctuary<\/a> in northern Mali for jihadi expansion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, the history of Al Qaeda as a US intelligence asset, its role in creating factional divisions and  instability in the Middle East, Central Asia and sub-Saharan Africa are not mentioned.  The activities of the jihadist Al Qaeda units in most of these countries are part of a diabolical covert intelligence agenda.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fundforpeace.org\/global\/images\/failedstatesindex\/fsi_basicheatmap_2012_wide.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"334\" usemap=\"#FPMap0\" border=\"0\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWeaker\u201d and \u201cFailed States\u201d: A Threat to America<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a twist logic, \u201cweaker failed states\u201d, according to the US Congress, are said to constitute a threat to the security of the US. The latter includes \u201cseveral threats emanating from states that are variously described as <strong>weak, fragile, vulnerable, failing, precarious, failed, in crisis, or collapsed<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>As the Cold War concluded in the early 1990s, analysts became aware of an emerging international security environment,<strong> in which weak and failing states became vehicles for transnational organized crime, nuclear proliferation pathways, and hot spots for civil conflict and humanitarian emergencies<\/strong>. The potential U.S. national security threats weak and failing states pose became further apparent with Al Qaeda&#8217;s September 11, 2001, attack on the United States, <strong>which Osama bin Laden masterminded from the safe haven that Afghanistan provided.<\/strong> The events of 9\/11 prompted President George W. Bush to claim in the 2002 U.S. National Security Strategy that \u201cweak states, like Afghanistan, can pose as great a danger to our national interests as strong states.\u201d (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fas.org\/sgp\/crs\/row\/RL34253.pdf\">Weak and Failing States: Evolving Security, Threats and U.S. Policy<\/a>, CRS Report for the US Congress, Washington, 2008)<\/p>\n<p>What is not mentioned in this Congressional CRS report is that the \u201chot spots of organized crime and civilian conflict\u201d are the result of US covert intelligence operations.<\/p>\n<p>Amply documented, the Afghan drug economy which generates over 90 percent of the World&#8217;s supply of heroin is tied into a multibillion dollar money laundering operation involving major financial institutions.  The drug trade out of Afghanistan  is protected by the CIA and US-NATO occupation forces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syria: Categorized as a \u201cFailed State\u201d<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The atrocities committed against the Syrian population by the US-NATO sponsored Free Syrian Army (FSA) create  conditions which favor sectarian warfare.<\/p>\n<p>Sectarian extremism favors the breakup of Syria as a Nation State as well as the demise of the central government in Damascus.<\/p>\n<p>Washington&#8217;s foreign policy objective is to transform Syria into what the National Intelligence Council (NIC) calls a \u201cfailed state\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Regime change implies maintaining a central government. As the Syrian crisis unfolds, the endgame is no longer \u201cregime change\u201d but the partition and destruction of Syria as a Nation State.<\/p>\n<p>The US-NATO-Israel strategy is to divide the country up into three weak states. Recent media reports intimate that if  Bashar Al Assad \u201crefuses to step down\u201d, \u201cthe alternative is a failed state like Somalia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/articlePictures\/syriakurd438.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"251\">One possible \u201dbreak-up scenario\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/hidden-us-israeli-military-agenda-break-syria-into-pieces\/31454\">reported by the Israeli press <\/a>would be the formation of separate and  \u201cindependent\u201d Sunni, Alawite-Shiite, Kurdish and Druze states.<\/p>\n<p>According to Major-General Yair Golan of Israel&#8217;s IDF \u201cSyria is in civil war, which will lead to a failed state, and terrorism will blossom in it.\u201d  The Israel Defence Forces are currently analyzing \u201chow Syria would break up\u201d, according to Major General Golan (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/05\/31\/us-syria-crisis-israel-idUSBRE84U0CT20120531\">Reuters, <\/a>May31, 2012)<\/p>\n<p>In November,  United Nations peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi intimated that Syria could become \u201cA New Somalia\u201d ,\u2026 \u201cwarning of a scenario in which warlords and militia fill a void left by a collapsed state.\u201d (Reuters, November 22, 2012)<\/p>\n<p> \u201dWhat I am afraid of is worse \u2026 the collapse of the state and that Syria turns into a new Somalia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that if this issue is not dealt with correctly, the danger is \u2018Somalisation&#8217; and not partition: the collapse of the state and the emergence of warlords, militias and fighting groups.\u201d (Ibid)<\/p>\n<p>What the UN envoy failed to mention is that the breakup of Somalia, was deliberate. It was part of a covert US military and intelligence agenda,  which is now being applied to several targeted countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, which are categorized as \u201cfailed states\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The central question is: who is failing the failed states? Who is \u201cTaking them Out\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>The planned break-up of Syria as a sovereign state is part of an  integrated regional military and intelligence agenda which includes Lebanon, Iran and Pakistan. According to the \u201cpredictions\u201d of the National Intelligence Council, the breakup of Pakistan is slated to occur in the course of the next three years.<\/p>\n<p>_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/store.globalresearch.ca\/store\/towards-a-world-war-iii-scenario-the-dangers-of-nuclear-war\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/store.globalresearch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/WWIII-book-ad-GRTV-copy.jpg\" alt=\"WWIII Scenario\" width=\"354\" height=\"236\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe US has embarked on a military adventure, \u201ca long war\u201d, which threatens the future of humanity. US-NATO weapons of mass destruction are portrayed as instruments of peace. Mini-nukes are said to be \u201charmless to the surrounding civilian population\u201d. Pre-emptive nuclear war is portrayed as a \u201chumanitarian undertaking\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhile one can conceptualize the loss of life and destruction resulting from present-day wars including Iraq and Afghanistan, it is impossible to fully comprehend the devastation which might result from a Third World War, using \u201cnew technologies\u201d and advanced weapons, until it occurs and becomes a reality. The international community has endorsed nuclear war in the name of world peace. \u201cMaking the world safer\u201d is the justification for launching a military operation which could potentially result in a nuclear holocaust.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nuclear war has become a multibillion dollar undertaking, which fills the pockets of US defense contractors. What is at stake is the outright \u201cprivatization of nuclear war\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Pentagon&#8217;s global military design is one of world conquest. The military deployment of US-NATO forces is occurring in several regions of the world simultaneously.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Central to an understanding of war, is the media campaign which grants it legitimacy in the eyes of public opinion. A good versus evil dichotomy prevails. The perpetrators of war are presented as the victims. Public opinion is misled.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Breaking the \u201cbig lie\u201d, which upholds war as a humanitarian undertaking, means breaking a criminal project of global destruction, in which the quest for profit is the overriding force.
