Device explodes near New Jersey train station

A device has exploded near a train station in the US state of New Jersey as an FBI bomb squad was attempting to disarm it with a robot.

Two men discovered five devices in a trash can Sunday night and informed the authorities, according to Christian Bollwage, the mayor of Elizabeth city.

The FBI was attempting to disarm one of the devices with a robot when it exploded at around 12:30 am Monday, Bollwage said in a press conference.

“I’m extremely concerned for the residents of the community, but more importantly extremely concerned for everyone in the state and country where someone can just go and drop a backpack into a garbage can that has multiple explosives in it with no timers and then you have to wonder how many people could have been hurt,” Bollwage said.

The FBI said in a statement that there were no injuries and law enforcement personnel are at the scene processing evidence.
