Several schoolchildren missing in Wales, police & mountain rescue search underway – multiple sources

At least 20 schoolchildren have been lost in Brecon Beacon, a mountain range in South Wales, several UK media outlets report, citing rescue teams

The pupils reportedly disappeared at 13:00 local time.

Initial reports claimed that the children were lost in caves, but it is now thought that they are above ground.

Police officers and three mountain rescue teams are currently taking part in the search near Tafarn Y Garreg area in Brecon Beacon, BBC added.

Police received several 999 calls reporting that the schoolchildren were in trouble, the Independent reported.

The mountain range in South Wales forms the central section of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The area is a popular training site for UK armed forces.

In 2013 three soldiers died from hyperthermia while on a Special Air Service (SAS) selection exercise.

The rescue helicopter from Royal Air Force (RAF) St Athan has also been sent to assist the search, Walesonline News said.

Mark Moran from Central Beacons Mountain Rescue told BBC that rescuers believe where the schoolchildren are, but the group is lost in the clouds.

Two children are believed to be suffering from hypothermia.

The rescue team has managed to make intermittent phone contact with the four groups of six children, who are without an adult, Moran added.
