Yemeni inmates held in a dreaded detention center in Saudi Arabiaâ„¢s southeastern province of Najran are reportedly subjected to brutal torture.
The alahale.net news website reported that most Yemeni nationals detained at the Najran jail are illegal workers who have falsely been suspected of connection with Yemenâ„¢s Shia Houthi movement.
The Yemeni prisoners have been subjected to electric shock, water-boarding and severe beating. One prisoner has reportedly been tortured to death.
Yemenâ„¢s Houthi movement played a key role in the popular revolution that forced ousted dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down in February 2012.
A large number of Yemenis are reportedly detained in Saudi Arabia prisons. In October 2012, an 18-year-old Yemeni youth died of severe torture by jail officers in a prison of the Saudi intelligence agency.
According to rights activists, many prisoners remain locked up in Saudi jails under harsh conditions and without access to legal representation.
Saudi Arabia has also been under fire especially for the detention of many anti-government protesters since the onset of a popular uprising in the country in 2011.
