As US Secretary of State John Kerry urges resumption of talks between Israel and Palestine, American analyst and author Stephen Lendman says Washington is œin lockstep with the Israeli policy” which runs counter to peace.
œAmerica is absolutely, 100 percent, in lockstep with the Israeli policy,” Lendman said in an interview with Press TV on Wednesday.
Kerry arrived in the occupied Palestinian territories on Tuesday to encourage Israelis and Palestinians to resume talks. The top diplomat will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and acting chief of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas separately during his trip.
“I can promise you that America will stand by the side of Israel every step of the way. It should rededicate every [effort] to the possibility of a just, appropriate and fair peace, which protects the security of Israel, guarantees that Israel’s security will be protected,” Kerry said during a ceremony shortly after his arrival.
Lendman dismissed the initiative as one-sided. œThere is no chance whatsoever that the ˜peace talks™ going on now will do anything for the Palestinians.”
œThere have been multiple rounds of so-called peace talks between Israel and Palestine since the 1970s but all of them have proven futile,” he noted.
The current round of talks, launched in July, quickly ran into trouble with Israel announcing plans to move forward with thousands of new settler homes, a large percentage of them in east al-Quds (Jerusalem).
œThere is nothing complicated about having peace between Israel and Palestine. But Israel absolutely does not want it, America does not want it and that™s the reason there™s never been a peace negotiated of any credibility,” Lendman said.
