Baroness Warsi is accused of gross hypocrisy after she boasted about Britainâ„¢s role in ending torture.
UK Foreign Office Minister Baroness Warsi has been accused of hypocrisy after she boasted about Britainâ„¢s role in ending torture.
The former Tory chairwoman claimed Britain has always condemned the use of torture and inhuman treatment while the British government seeks to bury evidence of its complicity in abusing prisoners during its so-called war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“International action against torture has long been, and continues to be, a priority for the UK,” Warsi said.
However, human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, condemned Warsiâ„¢s comments, saying that the British government is seeking to introduce secret evidence in civil cases which would mean that those alleging British complicity in their torture would not be able to defend them in court.
Å“Shouldn’t she also acknowledge that the UK has been far from open about its own murky role in torture in recent years?,” asked Allan Hogarth, Amnesty International UK’s head of policy and government affairs.
Earlier in June, the UN Committee Against Torture criticized the UK for its poor record on human rights and condemned the British governmentâ„¢s failure to hold to account those responsible for human rights violations and for the mistreatment of prisoners in Iraq.
