Mexico jails Shabazz case suspects

Two arrested men suspected of killing the grandson of US civil rights leader Malcolm X have been taken to prison to await trial, Mexican officials say.

A Mexico City court spokesman said Saturday that David Hernandez and Manuel Perez, accused of theft and aggravated homicide, were being held in a prison in the capital.

The two suspects were May 13. They are waiters at a bar where Malcolm Shabazz came into a violent dispute on May 8.

The brawl ended with Shabazz being beaten with a bat or stick in his head, face and torso. He later died of injuries sustained from the attack.

Shabazz was in Mexico City to meet Miguel Suarez, an immigration activist who was recently deported from the United States.

Before his demise, Shabazz was in the process of writing two books and attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

He had planned to visit Iran in 2013 to attend the Hollywoodism conference when he was arrested by FBI agents, sources outside the United States confirmed on February 4.

Born in 1984, Shabazz was the son of Qubilah Shabazz, who was the second daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz.

Malcolm X, Malcolm Shabazzâ„¢s grandfather and an influential civil rights leader, was shot dead at a political rally in New York on February 21, 1965.
