Iranian lawmakers have called on the nation to take part in Fridayâ„¢s presidential and city council elections in massive numbers, saying a huge turnout will safeguard national security and promote democracy.
Lawmakers said Iranâ„¢s enemies seek to foment despair and discourage participation in elections through their media propaganda campaigns.
They added that the best way to fight back is for everyone from all walks of life and political background to take part in the vote.
Lawmakers said participation is a duty because it will show that all Iranians care about their country and its future.
Opinion polls show that the presidential election in Iran is headed for a runoff.
Opinion polls also show that more than 60 percent of the nearly 50.5 million eligible voters will be taking part in the election.
The six candidates in Iranâ„¢s presidential election are President of the Expediency Councilâ„¢s Center for Strategic Research Hassan Rohani, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili, Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati, and former Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Gharazi.
Former Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel and former First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref withdrew their candidacy bids earlier this week.
Iranians will go to the polls in the nationâ„¢s 11th presidential election on June 14. Over 66,000 polling stations will be set up across the country, while expatriates will be also able to cast their ballots at 285 polling stations that will be set up overseas.
The fourth city and rural council elections are also scheduled to be held on the same day.
